Scrum Master Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a scrum master in California?
California does not issue a state license for scrum masters, so the hiring path runs through industry certification rather than a government board. Most California employers expect at minimum a Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) from Scrum Alliance or an equivalent credential like PMI-ACP. A bachelor's degree in a technical or business field strengthens your candidacy significantly. Candidates who add SAFe certification position themselves well for the large enterprise and government contractors concentrated in the Bay Area and Southern California.
How much do scrum masters make in California?
Scrum masters in California earn a median of about $134,440 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $58,340 for the lowest 10% to over $222,690 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire scrum masters in California?
Employers hiring scrum masters in California right now include Esri, Origence, and Akraya, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of enterprise technology firms, large health systems, and aerospace and defense contractors means scrum master demand is broad and not limited to any single industry sector.
Which California cities have the most scrum master jobs?
Redlands, Campbell, and Irvine are the California cities with the most scrum master openings. The Bay Area leads because of its density of enterprise software companies and technology headquarters, while Los Angeles draws volume from media technology, fintech, and healthcare IT, and San Diego's openings are shaped by its strong defense contracting and biotech sectors.
Are there remote scrum master jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. Scrum master work is inherently coordination and facilitation-focused, which translates well to remote and hybrid arrangements. About 11% of scrum master openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how broadly California technology and financial services employers have adopted flexible work models. Sprint ceremonies, retrospectives, and stakeholder communication are the parts of the role most commonly handled fully remote.
How can I get hired as a scrum master in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is to move laterally from a project coordinator, business analyst, or QA engineer role into a junior or associate scrum master position. Large California health systems such as Kaiser Permanente and Dignity Health, along with Bay Area technology firms, regularly post associate agile coach and scrum master apprentice titles that are designed for candidates transitioning from adjacent roles. Earning your CSM before applying and building a portfolio of sprint artifacts or retrospective outputs gives hiring managers a concrete signal of readiness when your resume shows limited direct scrum master experience.
Where can I find and apply to scrum master jobs in California?
You can find and apply to scrum master jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated in real time. Find roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly from each listing.
