Senior Business Intelligence Engineer Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a senior business intelligence engineer in Virginia?
The most direct path is a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field followed by several years of progressive BI or data engineering experience. Virginia has no state-issued license for this role, so advancement depends on building a portfolio of delivered analytics solutions, earning platform certifications such as those from Microsoft or Tableau, and, for the large defense and federal IT sector in Northern Virginia, obtaining a government security clearance.
How much do senior business intelligence engineers make in Virginia?
Senior business intelligence engineers in Virginia earn a median of about $126,430 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $76,420 for the lowest 10% to over $207,890 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire senior business intelligence engineers in Virginia?
Employers hiring senior business intelligence engineers in Virginia right now include General Dynamics Information Technology, KBR, and BRMi, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's concentration of defense contractors, federal agencies, and financial services firms means demand is broad and relatively stable across both commercial and government-adjacent employers.
Which Virginia cities have the most senior business intelligence engineer jobs?
The cities with the most senior business intelligence engineer openings in Virginia are Arlington, Herndon, and McLean. Northern Virginia dominates because of its density of defense contractors, federal agencies, and technology firms, while Richmond draws demand from financial services and state government, and Hampton Roads hiring is driven largely by military and defense-sector data programs.
Are there remote senior business intelligence engineer jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields. Senior business intelligence engineering is a desk-based, analytical discipline that translates well to remote and hybrid arrangements. About 73% of senior business intelligence engineer openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how broadly companies have embraced flexible work for data roles. The portions most likely to stay on-site are roles requiring access to classified systems or secure government facilities in the Northern Virginia defense corridor.
How can I get hired as a senior business intelligence engineer in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a business analyst, data analyst, or reporting analyst role at a Virginia employer, then building toward BI engineering responsibilities from there. Large Virginia-area employers in federal IT and consulting, including firms headquartered in the Northern Virginia technology corridor, regularly hire junior data or analytics associates and develop them internally. Completing a recognized cloud data platform certification and contributing to a demonstrable portfolio of dashboards or pipeline projects strengthens an application considerably when formal experience is limited.
Where can I find and apply to senior business intelligence engineer jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to senior business intelligence engineer jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings updated regularly. Search the listings to see roles that match your experience level and location preference, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
