Senior Software Engineering Jobs in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a senior software engineering in Montana?
Montana does not require a state-issued license to work as a software engineer, so the path centers on education and experience. Most senior roles require a bachelor's degree in computer science or a closely related field, followed by several years of progressive engineering responsibility. Candidates who build a portfolio demonstrating system design, team leadership, and complex problem-solving are most competitive with Montana's technology employers and federal contractors.
How much do senior software engineerings make in Montana?
Senior software engineerings in Montana earn a median of about $121,990 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $73,370 for the lowest 10% to over $221,400 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire senior software engineerings in Montana?
Companies currently hiring senior software engineerings in Montana include Quanta Infrastructure Solutions, CVS Health, and DCI Engineers, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Montana's mix of technology firms, financial software companies, healthcare systems, and federal contractors creates consistent demand for experienced engineers well above the entry level.
Which Montana cities have the most senior software engineering jobs?
Montana, Yellowstone County, and Helena have the most senior software engineering openings in Montana. Billings leads as the state's commercial center, drawing financial technology and healthcare IT employers, while Bozeman's growing tech scene and Missoula's university-anchored innovation district support strong secondary markets for engineering talent.
Are there remote senior software engineering jobs in Montana?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 14% of senior software engineering openings tied to Montana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how naturally this work translates to distributed teams. Backend engineering, cloud architecture, and platform roles are the most consistently remote, while roles requiring collaboration with on-site hardware or regulated data environments are more likely to require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a senior software engineering in Montana with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is building demonstrable project experience through open-source contributions, personal repositories, or contract work before targeting associate or mid-level engineer roles at Montana companies such as healthcare systems, regional financial firms, or federal contractors in Great Falls and Billings. Completing an accredited computer science program or a rigorous coding bootcamp, then applying to internship pipelines at Montana State University's industry partners or entry-level rotational programs, positions candidates for faster advancement into senior-level work.
