Senior UX UI Designer Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a senior ux ui designer in Illinois?
Senior ux ui designer roles in Illinois require no state-issued license or certification, so the path runs through education and portfolio work. Most Illinois employers expect a bachelor's degree in interaction design, human-computer interaction, graphic design, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience. Building a strong case study portfolio and accumulating several years of progressively responsible design work, ideally within Illinois industries like fintech, healthcare technology, or enterprise software, is the most reliable route to senior-level consideration.
How much do senior UX UI designers make in Illinois?
Senior UX UI designers in Illinois earn a median of about $85,710 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $58,090 for the lowest 10% to over $157,670 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire senior ux ui designers in Illinois?
Employers hiring senior ux ui designers in Illinois right now include Grainger, Realign, and State Farm, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's concentration of financial services headquarters, insurance companies, and large healthcare systems means consistent senior-level design demand well beyond the startup sector.
Which Illinois cities have the most senior ux ui designer jobs?
The cities with the most senior ux ui designer openings in Illinois are Chicago, Peoria, and Naperville. Chicago anchors the market as the state's technology and corporate headquarters center, while Naperville and nearby suburban corridors attract openings tied to the large insurance, financial services, and consulting firms based in the greater Chicagoland area.
Are there remote senior ux ui designer jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than most fields. Senior ux ui design is a screen-based, collaborative discipline that adapts well to distributed work. About 75% of senior ux ui designer openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with research, strategy, and visual design phases most commonly performed fully remotely. On-site expectations are most common at agencies and companies requiring in-person design sprints or stakeholder workshops.
How can I get hired as a senior ux ui designer in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing a junior or associate UX designer role at an Illinois agency or technology company, then building toward senior-level scope from within. Large Illinois employers in healthcare and financial services, including hospital systems and insurance carriers, run rotational design programs and accept new graduates with strong portfolios. Roles in UX research coordination, visual design, or product support can provide lateral entry.
