Field Service Technician — Petroleum Equipment
Collins Equipment Corp. | Cleveland, OH
About Collins Equipment
Collins Equipment is a family-owned and operated Ohio institution with over 80 years of history, and a BUSTR-certified petroleum equipment inspection and design-build firm. We serve municipalities, school districts, state agencies, airports, and commercial fleets across Ohio, keeping fuel systems compliant, safe, and running.
We're looking for someone who wants more than a job — we want to invest in your training and certifications and help you build a long-term career with Collins. Most of our team members have been with us for many years, and we're looking for the next person to grow alongside us for the long haul.
The Role
We're looking for a Field Service Technician to join our field team, supporting inspections, installations, and service calls across our municipal and commercial accounts. This is a hands-on, growth-track role: you'll start with inspection support and structured service work, and build toward independent diagnostic and repair capability on fuel dispensing, tank monitoring, and leak detection systems.
This role is designed to grow. With demonstrated reliability and technical aptitude, there's a clear path toward BUSTR-certified inspector status and eventually lead technician responsibilities dependent on capabilities, ambition, and career goals.
What You'll Do
- Assist with STI (Steel Tank Institute) and BUSTR-required annual inspections, tightness testing, and hydrotest procedures
- Support installation, troubleshooting, and repair of dispensers, submersible pumps, tank monitoring systems, and leak detection equipment (Gasboy, Wayne, Veeder-Root, and similar)
- Read and follow work orders accurately; document findings, parts used, and corrective actions clearly for invoicing
- Travel to customer sites throughout the greater Cleveland/Northeast/Central Ohio area (company vehicle provided)
- Communicate professionally and collaboratively with facility managers, school district staff, and municipal contacts on-site
- Work alongside our senior technician to learn diagnostic techniques on legacy and modern equipment
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment on truck and at customer locations
- Follow all safety protocols around fuel systems, confined spaces, and electrical work
- Schedule: this role works an early shift: 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM, Monday–Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Early start, early finish.
What We're Looking For
- 0–3 years of relevant experience — mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, or similar trade background welcome; petroleum equipment experience is a plus but not required
- Comfortable with hand tools, basic electrical troubleshooting, and reading technical diagrams
- Reliable, safety-conscious, and detail-oriented — this work touches regulated fuel systems
- Strong communication skills; comfortable representing Collins professionally at customer sites (schools, municipal buildings, correctional facilities, etc.)
- Strong problem-solving skills — able to diagnose mechanical issues methodically and think through a fix, not just follow a checklist
- Willingness to get your hands (and clothes) dirty; this is real field work, not a desk job Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
- Ability to work in varied outdoor conditions year-round, work on elevated equipment, and occasionally lift 50+ lbs
- Willingness to pursue BUSTR Class A/B operator certification (Collins will sponsor training)
Nice to Have
- Experience with fuel dispensers, USTs, or environmental compliance equipment
- Prior work in a field service or trade apprenticeship role
- Familiarity with basic digital tools (mobile job forms, photo documentation)
Growth Path
This role is the entry point into Collins' technical career track: Field Technician → BUSTR-Certified Inspector → Lead Technician
You'll train alongside our senior technician and technical team, with the opportunity to earn certifications that make you one of a small number of BUSTR-authorized inspectors in Ohio — a credential that's in high demand and hard to find.
Drug-Free Workplace
Collins Equipment is a drug-free workplace. Due to the government and municipal contracts we perform work under, candidates must pass a pre-employment drug screen and are subject to ongoing random drug testing as a condition of employment.
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive hourly pay, based on experience
- Company vehicle for field work
- Paid BUSTR certification training and continuing education
- Health insurance including optional dental, vision, and disability
Collins Equipment Corp. is an equal opportunity employer.
Pay: $22.00 - $25.00 per hour
Benefits:
- Dental insurance
- Health insurance
- Paid time off
- Professional development assistance

Service Technician Jobs in Cleveland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a service technician job in Cleveland?
Target Cleveland's manufacturing and industrial base first, where HVAC contractors, automotive dealerships, and heavy equipment dealers hire most actively. Roles concentrate in the Flats, Collinwood, and the Euclid industrial corridor east of the city. Candidates who hold EPA 608 certification for refrigerant handling or ASE credentials for automotive work move faster through hiring. Experience with commercial or industrial equipment gives a clear edge over residential-only backgrounds in this market.
Which companies hire service technicians in Cleveland?
Companies currently hiring service technicians in Cleveland include RMS Energy, Opta, and ABB, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Cleveland's employer mix skews toward large industrial distributors, automotive groups, and facilities-management contractors tied to the city's manufacturing and healthcare infrastructure.
Are there remote service technician jobs in Cleveland?
Yes, but only in limited cases, since most service technician work is hands-on and site-specific by nature. About 18% of service technician openings tied to Cleveland are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with remote work appearing mainly in technical support, diagnostic coordination, and warranty documentation roles. Field dispatch and physical repair positions remain fully on-site across Cleveland employers.
How can I get a service technician job in Cleveland with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Cleveland is through an apprenticeship or helper role with an HVAC or electrical contractor, several of which hire entry-level candidates and train on the job. Cleveland-area dealerships and equipment rental houses also bring on service assistant roles that lead to full technician positions within one to two years. Completing a trades program at Tri-C or Lincoln Tech strengthens your application significantly with local employers who recruit directly from those programs.
Which industries hire the most service technicians in Cleveland?
Cleveland service technician roles concentrate in Manufacturing, Automotive, and Telecommunications, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Cleveland's legacy as a manufacturing and logistics hub, combined with its large healthcare and utility infrastructure, keeps demand for qualified service technicians consistently high across those sectors.
