Software Engineering Manager Jobs in Tennessee: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software engineering manager in Tennessee?
The path to a software engineering manager role in Tennessee typically starts with several years as a software engineer followed by a move into a team lead or senior engineer position. Tennessee does not require a state-issued license for software engineering managers. Most Tennessee employers expect a bachelor's degree in a technical discipline and a record of leading engineering projects before promoting someone into management. Certifications in agile delivery, cloud architecture, or project management can strengthen a candidacy significantly.
Which companies hire software engineering managers in Tennessee?
Employers hiring software engineering managers in Tennessee right now include Oracle, L3Harris, and CVS Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Tennessee's concentration of healthcare systems, logistics companies, and financial services firms means demand for engineering managers who understand regulated and high-availability environments tends to be especially consistent.
Which Tennessee cities have the most software engineering manager jobs?
Nashville, Memphis, and Franklin have the most software engineering manager openings in Tennessee. Nashville dominates due to its large healthcare IT and corporate technology presence, while Memphis benefits from logistics and supply chain technology employers, and Knoxville draws on its manufacturing technology and university-adjacent innovation sectors.
Are there remote software engineering manager jobs in Tennessee?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 55% of software engineering manager openings tied to Tennessee are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how well management of engineering teams translates to distributed work. The portions of the role most suited to remote arrangements include sprint planning, code review oversight, and cross-functional stakeholder communication, while on-site presence is more often expected during hiring cycles or major product launches.
How can I get hired as a software engineering manager in Tennessee with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a team lead or tech lead role first rather than applying to management positions directly. Large Tennessee technology employers, including those within HCA Healthcare's IT organization and FedEx's technology division, hire senior engineers into lead roles that carry informal management responsibilities and often convert to formal manager titles. Building a portfolio of cross-functional project ownership, mentoring documentation, and delivery outcomes makes a candidate competitive for that first step up.
Where can I find and apply to software engineering manager jobs in Tennessee?
You can find and apply to software engineering manager jobs in Tennessee on Migrate Mate, which lists current Tennessee openings across Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, and other markets in the state. Find roles that fit your experience and location preference and apply directly to the ones that match.
