Software Test Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software test engineer in New York?
Software test engineering has no state-issued license in New York, so the path runs through education and credentials recognized by employers. Most hiring managers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or engineering, though strong candidates also come from coding bootcamps with a portfolio of automation projects. Industry certifications from ISTQB, including the Foundation Level certificate, are well regarded across New York's financial services and enterprise tech sectors and can substitute for some experience at the entry level.
How much do software test engineers make in New York?
Software test engineers in New York earn a median of about $121,240 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $58,180 for the lowest 10% to over $182,910 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software test engineers in New York?
Employers hiring software test engineers in New York right now include Plug Power, Nokia, and Spellman High Voltage Electronics Corporation, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of financial institutions, media companies, and large healthcare systems means demand is spread across industries rather than limited to a single tech-focused sector.
Which New York cities have the most software test engineer jobs?
New York, Hauppauge, and Albany have the most software test engineer openings in New York. New York City dominates by volume because of its dense concentration of financial services firms, media companies, and enterprise technology organizations, while Albany's state government and healthcare technology employers and Buffalo's growing financial and insurance sector drive demand in those markets.
Are there remote software test engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most fields. Software test engineering is a desk-based, tool-driven role that translates well to remote work, and about 10% of software test engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. Test automation, performance testing, and API testing roles tend to be the most remote-friendly, while positions requiring hands-on device lab access or embedded systems testing are more likely to require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a software test engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior QA analyst or associate software tester role, which large New York employers in financial services and healthcare technology commonly post as new-grad positions. Candidates who build a public automation portfolio using open-source projects and earn the ISTQB Foundation Level certificate stand out in a competitive market. Moving laterally from a manual QA analyst, technical support, or business analyst role at a New York firm is another well-traveled path into test engineering without a dedicated degree.
Where can I find and apply to software test engineer jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to software test engineer jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings to see roles that match your experience and specialization, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
