STEM OPT Biomedical Engineer Jobs
Biomedical Engineer roles in medical devices, diagnostics, and research are among the strongest fits for F-1 students on STEM OPT. Your 24-month extension applies when your employer is enrolled in E-Verify, and degrees in biomedical, electrical, or mechanical engineering typically satisfy STEM eligibility requirements.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Biomedical Engineer
Target employers already enrolled in E-Verify
Your STEM OPT extension is only valid at E-Verify-enrolled employers. Search the E-Verify employer search tool to confirm enrollment before accepting an offer, not after, to avoid gaps in your work authorization.
Document your training plan with precision
The I-983 training plan must tie your biomedical engineering duties directly to your degree field. Generic job descriptions get rejected. List specific skills like finite element analysis, device validation protocols, or FDA regulatory submissions that connect your role to your coursework.
Use Migrate Mate to filter biomedical engineering roles
Searching broadly wastes time on employers who won't hire OPT students. Migrate Mate filters biomedical engineer openings by E-Verify enrollment status so you're only applying to employers who can legally extend your authorization.
Check prevailing wage requirements before negotiating
Employers must pay the DOL prevailing wage for your occupation and location. Run your job title and metro area through the OFLC Wage Search before your offer conversation so you can negotiate from an informed position and flag any underpayment early.
Submit your extension application 90 days early
File your STEM OPT extension request with USCIS no earlier than 90 days before your initial OPT expires. Late or early filing can invalidate the application, and USCIS processing times don't adjust for delays on your end.

Find Biomedical Engineer JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does my biomedical engineering degree qualify me for the STEM OPT extension?
Biomedical Engineering degrees typically qualify because the field appears on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List under CIP code 14.0501. Your DSO verifies the exact CIP code on your I-20. Adjacent degrees like electrical engineering with a biomedical focus or mechanical engineering may also qualify depending on how your program was classified. Confirm with your DSO before assuming eligibility.
What E-Verify requirement applies to my STEM OPT employer?
Your employer must be actively enrolled in E-Verify at the specific worksite where you'll be employed, not just at the company level. If you're placed at a client site through a staffing arrangement, the end client must also be E-Verify enrolled. Verify enrollment through the E-Verify employer search before signing your offer letter, since enrollment cannot be completed retroactively for your start date.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a biomedical engineer role?
The I-983 must describe how your specific job duties relate to your biomedical engineering degree. For device roles, this means listing tasks like design verification testing, biocompatibility assessments, or regulatory submissions under FDA 21 CFR Part 820. Generic descriptions like 'engineering work' are insufficient. Your employer signs the form and both parties keep a copy on file for the duration of your OPT period.
Can my STEM OPT authorization bridge me to an H-1B if I'm selected in the lottery?
Yes. The cap-gap rule extends your OPT work authorization automatically if your H-1B petition is filed before your OPT expires and you're selected in the lottery. Your authorization continues through September 30 of the fiscal year your H-1B takes effect. You can continue working in your biomedical engineer role during this period without interruption, provided your employer maintains E-Verify enrollment throughout.
How do I find biomedical engineer jobs at E-Verify employers?
Migrate Mate lists biomedical engineer roles filtered by E-Verify enrollment status, so you're not wasting applications on employers who can't support your STEM OPT extension. You can also cross-reference O*NET for the SOC code 17-2031 to understand which employers in medical devices, pharma, and healthcare technology typically hire for this role, then verify E-Verify status before applying.
