Verify your CIP code before applying
Check your degree's CIP code against the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List before targeting roles. Psychology CIP codes like 42.2803 qualify, but not every counseling-adjacent degree does. Confirm with your DSO before your OPT end date.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask hiring managers to confirm their E-Verify Company ID during the offer stage, not after. Clinical employers like hospitals and university counseling centers often enroll, but private practices frequently don't. An unenrolled employer disqualifies your STEM OPT extension entirely.
Target employers with established clinical training structures
The I-983 training plan requires a direct supervisor and a documented learning objective tied to your STEM degree. Community mental health centers and hospital systems typically have structured supervision programs that satisfy this requirement more cleanly than solo practices.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for STEM OPT-eligible postings
Search for Counseling Psychologist roles on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with E-Verify enrollment and prior OPT hiring history. This cuts the time spent vetting individual employers from your list.
Align your I-983 learning objectives with licensure milestones
USCIS reviews whether your training plan connects meaningfully to your STEM degree. Frame supervised clinical hours and assessment work as applied behavioral science, not just job duties. Your DSO must co-sign the plan, so draft it together before your extension start date.
Research prevailing wages before negotiating your offer
Pull the wage level for SOC code 19-3031 in your target metro using the OFLC Wage Search. Employers who later sponsor your H-1B must certify a wage at or above the prevailing rate, so accepting below Level I now can complicate that filing.

Find Counseling Psychologist JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a psychology degree qualify for the STEM OPT extension for Counseling Psychologist roles?
It depends on your specific degree and CIP code. A doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology under CIP code 42.2803 appears on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List and typically qualifies. A general counseling or social work degree usually does not. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO before assuming eligibility, since the extension is tied to the degree on record, not the job title.
Does my employer need to be enrolled in E-Verify to hire me on STEM OPT?
Yes. E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement for STEM OPT, not a preference. Your employer must be actively enrolled before USCIS will approve the extension. Many private practices and small counseling nonprofits are not enrolled. Ask for the company's E-Verify Company ID before signing an offer. You can find STEM OPT-eligible employers on Migrate Mate, which filters for E-Verify-enrolled organizations.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a Counseling Psychologist role?
The I-983 requires a documented training plan that connects your day-to-day work to your STEM degree field. For a Counseling Psychologist, this means outlining how your assessment, therapy, and research duties apply behavioral and psychological science. You'll need a named supervisor, defined learning goals, and your DSO's signature. USCIS can audit the plan, so generic job descriptions are not sufficient.
Can I work toward licensure hours during my STEM OPT period?
Yes, supervised clinical hours for licensure count as qualifying work as long as the role is paid, matches your STEM degree field, and is at least 20 hours per week. Unpaid or volunteer hours don't satisfy STEM OPT's employment requirement. Your I-983 training plan should explicitly reference the licensure supervision framework so the connection to your degree is documented.
What happens to my STEM OPT if my employer loses E-Verify enrollment mid-employment?
If your employer's E-Verify enrollment lapses, your STEM OPT authorization is no longer valid for that job. You must stop working and either find a new E-Verify-enrolled employer or risk falling out of status. USCIS requires ongoing enrollment, not just enrollment at the time of approval. Check your employer's E-Verify status periodically and notify your DSO immediately if enrollment changes.
