Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Servicenow Software Engineer
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code maps to an eligible STEM field through USCIS. Computer science, information systems, and software engineering degrees commonly qualify, but interdisciplinary programs sometimes require closer review from your DSO.
Filter job postings by E-Verify status
Use E-Verify's employer search to confirm enrollment before investing time in an application. ServiceNow-heavy shops at smaller consulting firms and startups often aren't enrolled, which disqualifies them regardless of how enthusiastic the hiring manager is about sponsoring you.
Build your I-983 training plan around ServiceNow modules
Your I-983 must list specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree. Map your ServiceNow development work, such as scripting, workflow automation, or integration builds, to concrete engineering competencies your DSO can connect back to your coursework.
Target employers who already file H-1B petitions
Use Migrate Mate to find companies with verified DOL Labor Condition Application filing history for software engineering roles. Employers already navigating H-1B visa requirements understand STEM OPT compliance and are far less likely to withdraw an offer over paperwork concerns.
Time your application around the cap-gap window
If your OPT expires before October 1 and your employer files an H-1B petition on your behalf, the cap-gap rule automatically extends your work authorization. Confirm your employer is prepared to file by the April registration deadline so there's no gap in your ServiceNow role.
Get your training plan countersigned before day one
DOL requires your I-983 to be signed by both you and an authorized employer representative before your STEM OPT employment starts. Delays in getting the right signatory, often a direct manager rather than HR, are a common reason start dates slip by weeks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a ServiceNow Software Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your employer classifies the role under a software or systems engineering occupation and your degree is in an eligible STEM field. The role needs to provide practical training directly related to your major. Your DSO will verify the match between your job duties and your CIP code before recommending the extension to USCIS.
What STEM degrees make you eligible for STEM OPT as a ServiceNow engineer?
Degrees in computer science, software engineering, information systems, computer engineering, and related fields typically qualify. The eligibility depends on your degree's CIP code appearing on the STEM Designated Degree Program list maintained by the Department of Homeland Security. Check the list through USCIS or ask your DSO to confirm before you apply for the extension.
How do I confirm my ServiceNow employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
Search the E-Verify employer database by company name before signing an offer letter. Enrollment is mandatory for all STEM OPT employers, and working without it puts your status at risk. Some companies are enrolled at the corporate level but not at subsidiary or office level, so confirm the specific legal entity that will employ you is the one enrolled.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a ServiceNow Software Engineer position?
Your I-983 must describe specific goals, activities, and performance measurements tied to your STEM degree. For a ServiceNow role, that typically includes objectives around platform development, scripting, systems integration, or ITSM process engineering. Both you and an authorized company representative must sign it before your extension start date, and your DSO countersigns before submitting to USCIS.
Where can I find ServiceNow Software Engineer jobs where employers are prepared to hire STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate filters ServiceNow Software Engineer listings for employers with active E-Verify enrollment and a history of sponsoring work authorization, so you're not starting from scratch on compliance research. This is especially useful for identifying which companies already understand the I-983 and reporting requirements that come with STEM OPT hires.
