INTRODUCTION
The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Hollings Cancer Center seeks a highly organized and collaborative professional to serve as the System Director of Strategic Initiatives within the Cancer Integrated Center of Clinical Excellence (ICCE). This pivotal role supports the successful execution of MUSC’s System Cancer Strategic Plan, with a focus on statewide initiative coordination, regional cancer center development, access expansion, and preparation for NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center designation in 2028.
Reporting to the System Administrative Officer of the Cancer ICCE, and working in close partnership with the Executive Director of Cancer System Integration, the System Director of Strategic Initiatives will serve as a central point of coordination for project planning, milestone tracking, and alignment of efforts across Hollings leadership, site-based teams, academic departments, and ICCE partners.
The System Director, Strategic Initiatives will also serve as a key liaison to the MUSC Health Strategy Office, working collaboratively with the System Executive Director of Strategy to align cancer initiatives with the broader enterprise portfolio. The role includes other strategic projects that support operational readiness for upcoming milestones—including the launch of new regional cancer centers and the opening of MUSC’s new one-stop-shop cancer hospital in April 2030.
Position Summary
The Cancer ICCE System Director of Strategic Initiatives plays a key role in the delivery of MUSC’s cancer vision—driving disciplined execution of strategic priorities through collaborative planning, workstream oversight, and enterprise alignment.
Acting as a central point of coordination across campuses and functions, the System Director will lead tracking and operational follow-through for the System Cancer Strategic Plan, serve as the primary liaison to the MUSC Health Strategy Office, and oversee strategic program implementation across the cancer service line.
This role is ideal for a detail-oriented, systems-minded leader who brings clarity and structure to complex initiatives, and who thrives on supporting forward momentum across a wide network of contributors and stakeholders.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Project Management (35%)
- Lead the development, execution, and performance tracking of strategic initiatives across the cancer service line.
- Support implementation of enterprise priorities such as new cancer center launches, the cancer hospital build-out, service expansion, and access optimization efforts.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary workgroups, facilitate decision-making, and monitor deliverables against timelines and goals.
- Escalate risks, barriers, or interdependencies that may impact progress, and propose mitigation strategies.
- Collaborate with Executive Director of Cancer Service Line Integration, site and ICCE leaders to support readiness planning for service launches, space transitions, and regional program rollouts.
- Provide structure and documentation for pilots, phased rollouts, and post-implementation assessments.
- Serve as a convener and translator between project owners, clinical leads, and operational teams to maintain alignment and accountability.
Strategic Planning & Initiative Execution (30%)
- Support the development of the cancer service line’s annual strategic work plan in collaboration with leadership.
- Track and report on progress toward strategic milestones, KPIs, and deliverables, ensuring transparency across stakeholders.
- Partner with Finance, Analytics, and Operations teams to align data, resource, and budget planning with initiative goals.
- Manage executive dashboards, written updates, and visual materials for internal reporting and Board-level presentations.
- Manage the planning and tracking of initiatives within the System Cancer Strategic Plan, ensuring timelines, deliverables, and accountability structures are in place.
- Coordinate projects across campuses, tumor programs, and administrative units to maintain alignment and visibility.
- Support operational readiness and implementation for major efforts such as new cancer center launches, ambulatory service expansion, and site activation plans.
Stakeholder Communication and Governance Support (20%)
- Support internal communications and engagement across departments, campuses, and stakeholder groups.
- Prepare briefing materials, slide decks, and executive summaries for steering committees and senior leadership forums.
- Assist with governance coordination, agenda setting, and documentation for cancer-related systemwide planning efforts.
Enterprise Strategy Liaison (15%)
- Serve as a key connector between the Cancer ICCE and the MUSC Health Strategy Office, ensuring cancer initiatives are represented in enterprise-level strategic planning and reporting cycles.
- Collaborate with the System Executive Director of Strategy to synchronize cancer goals and performance updates with systemwide initiatives.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, Public Health, or a related field required.
- Minimum 8–10 years of progressive experience in healthcare strategy, project management, service line execution, or enterprise planning.
- Proven ability to manage multiple initiatives in complex, matrixed healthcare or academic settings.
- Exceptional organizational skills and an ability to bring structure and discipline to dynamic environments.
- Demonstrated success in developing work plans, tracking performance, and translating strategic vision into operational execution.
- Adept at coordinating across teams and ensuring progress without needing to be the outward-facing representative.
- Experience working in oncology, academic medicine, or integrated health systems is strongly preferred.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience supporting strategy or planning functions within a cancer center or academic health system.
- Knowledge of Epic, Tableau, or project management software is a plus.
