Structural Engineer Jobs in Philadelphia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a structural engineer job in Philadelphia?
Focus on firms working Philadelphia's active sectors: transit and bridge rehabilitation through SEPTA and PennDOT contracts, higher education expansion across University City, Navy Yard redevelopment, and commercial high-rise construction in Center City. Candidates who can show experience with concrete and steel design on urban projects stand out. Knowing Philadelphia's historic masonry building stock is a genuine differentiator for renovation-heavy roles.
Which companies hire structural engineers in Philadelphia?
Employers hiring structural engineers in Philadelphia right now include Jacobs, EwingCole, and Hargrove Engineers + Constructors, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Philadelphia's hiring mix ranges from large national engineering firms with local offices to regional MEP and civil practices, plus public agencies and university facilities departments with in-house structural staff.
Are there remote structural engineer jobs in Philadelphia?
Yes, though remote work is limited by nature for structural engineers since site visits, field inspections, and client coordination typically require physical presence. About 50% of structural engineer openings tied to Philadelphia are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting roles where hybrid arrangements are most viable. Analytical and design-heavy tasks, such as load calculations and modeling, are the portions most commonly done off-site.
How can I get a structural engineer job in Philadelphia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Philadelphia is joining a mid-size engineering firm on a transit or municipal infrastructure contract, where project volume creates consistent EIT-level openings. Drexel co-op alumni networks and firms holding long-term SEPTA or Philadelphia Water Department contracts regularly bring on early-career engineers. A portfolio showing FEA software proficiency and any Philadelphia studio or capstone project experience accelerates consideration significantly.
Which industries hire the most structural engineers in Philadelphia?
Philadelphia structural engineer roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services and Construction & Real Estate, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Philadelphia's dense infrastructure, aging transit network, major hospital expansion programs, and continuous university construction cycle keep those sectors among the most active employers in the region.
