Structural Engineer Jobs in Pittsburgh: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a structural engineer job in Pittsburgh?
Focus on the sectors that drive Pittsburgh hiring: bridge and highway infrastructure, university campus construction in Oakland, and commercial redevelopment in the Strip District and Downtown. Engineering firms and municipal agencies dominate the market, with specialized openings in transportation and industrial work tied to the region's manufacturing base. Candidates with bridge design experience or familiarity with Pennsylvania Department of Transportation project requirements stand out locally.
Which companies hire structural engineers in Pittsburgh?
Employers hiring structural engineers in Pittsburgh right now include HDR, A. MORTON THOMAS & ASSOCIATES, and GFT, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Pittsburgh's hiring mix leans heavily toward mid-size engineering consultancies, civil infrastructure firms, and university facilities departments serving the city's dense institutional and public-sector project pipeline.
Are there remote structural engineer jobs in Pittsburgh?
Yes, though options are limited since most structural engineering work requires site visits, field assessments, and hands-on coordination. About 44% of structural engineer openings tied to Pittsburgh are remote or hybrid as of September 2026. The roles most likely to offer remote flexibility are those focused on analytical modeling, CAD-based design, or structural review work for national consulting firms with a Pittsburgh presence.
How can I get a structural engineer job in Pittsburgh with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point in Pittsburgh is a junior engineer or EIT role at a mid-size civil or structural consultancy, where you support licensed engineers on active infrastructure and commercial projects. Pittsburgh's strong university presence, especially Carnegie Mellon and Pitt, makes co-op and internship pipelines a common route into local firms. Familiarity with STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, or AutoCAD and a focus on transportation or bridge work helps candidates stand out in Pittsburgh's project-heavy market.
Which industries hire the most structural engineers in Pittsburgh?

Pittsburgh's legacy in infrastructure, its active university expansion programs, and ongoing commercial redevelopment of historic industrial sites all fuel steady, cross-sector demand for structural engineering talent.
