Becoming a student services counselor in DC typically requires a master's degree in counseling, student affairs, or higher education administration. Candidates pursuing a counseling credential must apply through the DC Board of Professional Counseling, which oversees licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor. Many DC institutions also hire candidates with a master's in social work or education policy, especially for roles focused on college access and workforce readiness programs.

Which District of Columbia cities have the most student services counselor jobs?
The cities with the most student services counselor openings in District of Columbia are Washington. Washington, DC itself drives the majority of demand given its dense concentration of universities, community colleges, and federally funded education nonprofits, while surrounding areas like Silver Spring and Arlington attract openings tied to satellite campuses and workforce training centers serving the broader metro.

The most realistic entry path is a graduate assistantship in a DC university's advising, housing, or student affairs office, which provides supervised experience while you complete your master's degree.
