Student Services Counselor Jobs in Washington: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a student services counselor in Washington?
Most student services counselor positions in Washington require at least a bachelor's degree in counseling, education, psychology, or social work, with many four-year institutions and larger community colleges preferring a master's degree. Washington does not issue a state license specifically for higher education student services counselors, but roles with a clinical or mental health component may require a Licensed Mental Health Counselor credential issued through the Washington State Department of Health. Building experience through graduate assistantships, internships at Washington institutions, or related advising roles strengthens candidacy considerably.
Which companies hire student services counselors in Washington?
Washington student services counselor roles are posted by Amazon, Washington State University, and Greystar and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Washington's extensive public higher education network, which includes the University of Washington system, Washington State University campuses, and the 34-college State Board for Community and Technical Colleges network, accounts for a large share of consistent openings statewide.
Which Washington cities have the most student services counselor jobs?
Seattle, Spokane, and Olympia have the highest concentration of student services counselor openings in Washington. Seattle dominates due to the density of four-year universities, community colleges, and nonprofit educational organizations in the greater Puget Sound region, while Spokane and Tacoma reflect the large WSU and University of Washington branch campuses and significant community college enrollment in those metros.
Are there remote student services counselor jobs in Washington?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely desk-based fields because student services counseling is relationship-intensive and many employers expect some on-campus presence. About 43% of student services counselor openings tied to Washington are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with fully remote arrangements most often found in financial aid advising, online program advising, and roles at institutions that primarily serve distance learners.
How can I get hired as a student services counselor in Washington with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a graduate assistantship or practicum placement at a Washington community college or university while completing a relevant master's program, which provides both credential and direct advising experience simultaneously. Large employers like the University of Washington and the Seattle Colleges district regularly post entry-level advisor and program coordinator roles that do not require prior counseling experience. Adjacent roles such as enrollment specialist, academic coach, and retention coordinator offer a lateral move into student services and are often stepping stones to a full counseling title.
Where can I find and apply to student services counselor jobs in Washington?
You can find and apply to student services counselor jobs in Washington on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the listings to find roles that match your background and apply directly to the ones that fit your experience and preferred location.
