Substation Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a substation engineer in New York?
Becoming a substation engineer in New York typically starts with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, followed by gaining field experience in power systems or substation operations. New York requires a Professional Engineer license from the New York State Education Department for engineers who sign and seal design documents. Candidates sit for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam early in their careers, then pursue the Professional Engineering exam after accumulating the required supervised experience.
Which companies hire substation engineers in New York?
Employers hiring substation engineers in New York right now include LaBella Associates, Arcadis, and WSP, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense utility infrastructure and ongoing grid modernization efforts mean large investor-owned utilities and engineering contractors are among the most consistent sources of openings statewide.
Which New York cities have the most substation engineer jobs?
Syracuse, Albany, and Rochester account for the most substation engineer openings in New York. New York City leads because of Con Edison's extensive underground and overhead transmission network, while Albany and Buffalo are driven by National Grid's upstate operations and ongoing capital improvement projects tied to New York's grid modernization mandates.
Are there remote substation engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Substation engineering is fundamentally a hands-on discipline involving site work, equipment inspection, and commissioning that cannot be done remotely. About 15% of substation engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. The portions of the role most suited to remote work include protection relay modeling, AutoCAD or ETAP design, and project documentation.
How can I get hired as a substation engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to engineering associate or junior engineer rotational programs at Con Edison or National Grid, both of which recruit new graduates from programs at CUNY, RPI, and Stony Brook. Adjacent roles such as electrical inspector, relay technician, or field engineer with a contractor like Burns and McDonnell or Jacobs can also open the door. Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam early and building AutoCAD or ETAP skills gives candidates a clear edge.
Where can I find and apply to substation engineer jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to substation engineer jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly from the listings on this page.
