Surveyor Jobs in Louisiana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a surveyor in Louisiana?
Licensure in Louisiana is administered by the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board, which requires passing the Fundamentals of Surveying exam, accumulating supervised field experience, and then passing the Principles and Practice of Surveying exam. Most candidates hold an associate or bachelor's degree in surveying technology or geomatics from a Louisiana institution such as LSU or Nicholls State before sitting for the exams.
How much do surveyors make in Louisiana?
Surveyors in Louisiana earn a median of about $63,140 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $38,810 for the lowest 10% to over $111,790 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire surveyors in Louisiana?
Louisiana surveyor roles are posted by Thompson Engineering, RDSolutions, and Technip Energies and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Energy infrastructure projects across the Gulf Coast and ongoing coastal restoration contracts mean that both large engineering firms and regional survey companies maintain consistent hiring pipelines in Louisiana.
Which Louisiana cities have the most surveyor jobs?
Cameron, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans account for the largest share of surveyor openings in Louisiana. Baton Rouge and New Orleans draw the most postings because of their concentration of engineering firms, port infrastructure, and state agency contracts, while Lafayette serves as a hub for oilfield and pipeline survey work tied to the Acadiana energy corridor.
Are there remote surveyor jobs in Louisiana?
Yes, but they're rare. About 11% of surveyor openings tied to Louisiana are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, which reflects the fundamentally field-based nature of the work. The roles most likely to include remote components are GIS analysis, deed research, and project coordination positions that don't require daily physical presence on a survey site.
How can I get hired as a surveyor in Louisiana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a survey technician or field crew member role, where you gain supervised hours that count toward licensure. Large Louisiana engineering firms and state agencies often bring on recent geomatics graduates or candidates with related experience in construction or GIS as junior technicians. Completing the Fundamentals of Surveying exam early and holding a relevant associate degree from a Louisiana program strengthens any application significantly.
Where can I find and apply to surveyor jobs in Louisiana?
You can find and apply to surveyor jobs in Louisiana on Migrate Mate, which lists current Louisiana openings updated regularly. Search the available roles by location or specialty, find the ones that fit your background, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
