Tax Manager Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax manager in Illinois?
Tax managers in Illinois almost always hold an active CPA license issued through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, which requires passing all four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination and meeting Illinois education and experience requirements. A bachelor's degree in accounting is the standard foundation, often supplemented by a master's in taxation or accounting. Most candidates build their path through several years in public accounting or a corporate tax department before moving into a management role.
How much do tax managers make in Illinois?
Tax managers in Illinois earn a median of about $80,230 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $54,510 for the lowest 10% to over $131,990 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax managers in Illinois?
Employers hiring tax managers in Illinois right now include BDO, Wipfli, and RSM, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's dense concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters and major professional services firms means consistent year-round demand, particularly in and around the Chicago metro.
Which Illinois cities have the most tax manager jobs?
Chicago, Naperville, and Lincolnshire have the most tax manager openings in Illinois. Chicago drives the largest share given its concentration of corporate headquarters, Big Four and regional accounting firms, and financial services companies, while Naperville and Schaumburg attract openings through the sizeable suburban campuses of multinationals that have relocated or expanded outside the city core.
Are there remote tax manager jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than many finance roles, since tax compliance and provision work is largely desk-based and document-driven. About 77% of tax manager openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting a shift that accelerated after the pandemic. Federal and state income tax compliance and tax provision roles tend to be the most amenable to remote arrangements, while positions that require close coordination with local finance or legal teams often remain hybrid.
How can I get hired as a tax manager in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a staff or senior associate tax role at a Chicago-area public accounting firm and progressing internally. Large Illinois employers such as Grant Thornton, RSM, and BDO run structured associate programs that hire recent accounting graduates and advance high performers into supervisory roles over several years. Candidates moving laterally from audit, financial reporting, or treasury roles can accelerate their path by pursuing the CPA license through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, which signals readiness for technical tax responsibility.
