Tax Manager Jobs in Wisconsin: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax manager in Wisconsin?
Most Wisconsin employers require a CPA license issued through the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services, which oversees CPA examination eligibility and licensure in the state. Candidates typically hold a bachelor's degree in accounting and complete the additional credit hours Wisconsin requires for CPA licensure. From there, several years of progressive experience in tax compliance or provision work, often starting in public accounting, builds the technical depth employers expect before promoting into a management role.
How much do tax managers make in Wisconsin?
Tax managers in Wisconsin earn a median of about $79,400 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $58,340 for the lowest 10% to over $127,800 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax managers in Wisconsin?
Wisconsin tax manager roles are posted by BDO, Wipfli, and Baker Tilly Canada and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Wisconsin's concentration of insurance, manufacturing, and retail headquarters means in-house corporate tax departments are a consistent source of management-level openings alongside regional public accounting firms.
Which Wisconsin cities have the most tax manager jobs?
Milwaukee, Madison, and Baraboo account for the largest share of tax manager openings in Wisconsin. Milwaukee leads as the state's primary corporate and financial services hub, anchored by large insurance, banking, and manufacturing headquarters, while Madison's mix of state government contractors, technology firms, and university-affiliated organizations drives steady demand, and Green Bay's industrial and food-processing employers round out the top markets.
Are there remote tax manager jobs in Wisconsin?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 82% of tax manager openings tied to Wisconsin are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how well the analytical and compliance-focused nature of tax work translates to distributed environments. Tax provision, federal compliance review, and research tasks are the functions most commonly offered on a fully remote basis, while roles with significant team leadership or audit liaison responsibility more often require at least partial on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a tax manager in Wisconsin with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a staff or senior tax associate role at a Wisconsin regional CPA firm, where firms such as Wipfli, Sikich, and Baker Tilly's Milwaukee and Madison offices regularly hire candidates without prior management experience and develop them through structured advancement tracks. From corporate roles, lateral moves from financial reporting analyst or general ledger accountant positions are common entry points into a tax team. Completing CPA exam sections early and building exposure to OneSource or CCH software adds a meaningful edge when applying to management-track roles.
Where can I find and apply to tax manager jobs in Wisconsin?
You can find and apply to tax manager jobs in Wisconsin on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from Wisconsin employers. Search the listings, identify the roles that match your background and target market, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
