The standard path starts with a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field, followed by passing the CPA exam and obtaining licensure through the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy. Most employers require several years of tax experience in public accounting or a corporate tax department before promoting or hiring at the manager level. Strong knowledge of federal tax law and Texas franchise tax rules is expected.
How much do tax managers make in Texas?
Tax managers in Texas earn a median of about $80,920 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $53,380 for the lowest 10% to over $132,040 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax managers in Texas?
Employers hiring tax managers in Texas right now include KPMG, Weaver, and Alvarez & Marsal, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large concentration of energy company headquarters, regional banks, and national accounting firms creates steady, recurring demand for tax professionals at the manager level.
Which Texas cities have the most tax manager jobs?
Dallas, Houston, and Austin have the most tax manager openings in Texas. Houston drives volume through its energy sector headquarters and large public accounting offices, Dallas attracts corporate finance and professional services firms, and Austin's growing technology and venture-backed company base has added a steady stream of in-house tax roles over the past several years.
Are there remote tax manager jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 20% of tax manager openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting that most of the work involves analysis, modeling, and review rather than on-site presence. Tax provision work and federal compliance roles are the most consistently offered as remote or hybrid arrangements.
How can I get hired as a tax manager in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is joining a Big Four or large regional accounting firm in Texas as a tax associate or staff accountant and building toward management over several years. Firms like PwC, KPMG, Deloitte, and Grant Thornton all operate significant Texas offices with structured promotion tracks. Candidates who have passed the CPA exam, even without licensure yet, stand out considerably.
