Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Emergency Department Registered Nurse
Verify your NCLEX meets TN requirements
TN visa sponsorship for RNs requires passing the NCLEX-RN, not just a provincial nursing license. Confirm your NCLEX results are on file and your credential documents are ready before approaching employers about sponsorship.
Target health systems with ED nurse shortages
Emergency departments at Level I and Level II trauma centers regularly hire internationally trained nurses and have in-house immigration support. Search for facilities actively posting ED RN roles with visa sponsorship rather than cold-applying to general hospital career pages.
Search TN-active employers using Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate surfaces employers with recent visa filings for nursing roles, so you can target hospitals already experienced with work visa sponsorship instead of educating employers from scratch.
Clarify the support letter requirement before accepting an offer
Your employer must prepare a support letter documenting your job offer, qualifications, and role details before you can apply for TN status. For Canadian applicants, present this letter at a U.S. port of entry; for Mexican applicants, submit it with your application at a U.S. consulate. Ask HR explicitly whether they're prepared to provide this support letter or have an immigration attorney ready to handle it.
Prepare a single-page credential summary for Canadian border entry
Canadian RNs applying for TN status at a port of entry need to present their degree, nursing license, NCLEX results, and the employer's offer letter in one organized package. Border officers make on-the-spot decisions, so clarity speeds approval.
Distinguish your state license situation early in negotiations
TN approval doesn't guarantee you can practice immediately. Confirm whether your destination state is a Nurse Licensure Compact member or requires a separate state RN license, and factor the licensing timeline into your start date discussion with the employer.
Emergency Department Registered Nurse TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Emergency Department RNs qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Registered Nurse is an explicitly listed occupation under the USMCA TN category. Emergency Department RNs qualify as long as you hold a valid nursing license, have passed the NCLEX-RN, and have a qualifying job offer from a U.S. employer willing to sponsor your TN application. For Canadians, your employer writes a support letter that you present at the U.S. port of entry. For Mexicans, your employer provides a support letter for your application at a U.S. consulate.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for ED RN roles?
The TN visa is generally faster and more accessible for Canadian and Mexican RNs than H-1B visa. There is no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and no lengthy petition process. Canadian citizens can receive TN status directly at a port of entry the same day. H-1B requires annual lottery registration in March, a multi-month USCIS petition process, and employer payment of substantial filing fees. For nurses who qualify under TN, the TN route is structurally simpler and doesn't leave your start date subject to a random selection outcome.
What documents does a Canadian RN need at the border for TN status?
You'll need your Canadian passport, a detailed employer offer letter specifying your ED RN title and duties, proof of your nursing degree, your current provincial nursing license, and your NCLEX-RN results. The border officer will review these on the spot. Organizing them into a single clear package reduces delays and follow-up questions from the officer.
How can I find ED RN employers who already understand TN sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It filters employers by their experience with visa sponsorship, so you can identify hospitals and health systems that have sponsored work visas before rather than starting conversations with employers who need to learn the process from scratch. That distinction can save weeks in your job search.
Can a Mexican RN get TN status for an Emergency Department role?
Yes, but the process differs from the Canadian path. Mexican citizens cannot apply at a port of entry and must go through consular processing at a U.S. embassy or consulate in Mexico. There is also a numerical limit on TN visas for Mexican nationals. Your employer will need to prepare a support letter documenting your qualifications and job offer before your consular appointment.
