Frame your offer letter around USMCA categories
Your employer's offer letter must tie your Federal Account Executive duties to a recognized TN visa category, typically Management Consultant. Vague titles like 'sales rep' get flagged at the border, so ensure the letter specifies consulting, strategic advisory, or contract management functions.
Target defense and civilian agency contractors first
Federal system integrators, IT contractors, and professional services firms holding government contracts are the most practiced TN sponsors for this role. They understand the compliance requirements and already have HR processes built around USMCA professional categories.
Prepare a degree-to-duties bridge document
CBP officers assess whether your business or related degree directly supports your Federal Account Executive responsibilities. Draft a one-page summary connecting your academic credentials to specific duties like federal procurement, agency relationship management, and contract lifecycle oversight.
Clarify your clearance eligibility before applying
Many federal account roles require at minimum a public trust background check, and some require security clearances. Canadian citizens can obtain U.S. security clearances; Mexican citizens face more restrictions. Confirm clearance eligibility with your prospective employer before investing time in the TN filing process.
Use Migrate Mate to find active TN-sponsoring employers
Search Migrate Mate to identify Federal Account Executive roles at employers with documented TN visa filing history, so you're targeting companies already equipped to move quickly through the offer and filing stage rather than educating a new HR team from scratch.
Understand the Mexican TN allocation before you negotiate timelines
Mexican TN applicants must apply through a U.S. consulate and face an annual cap of 5,500 approvals. Build extra time into your start date negotiations to account for consulate appointment availability and USCIS petition processing, which Canadians bypassing at the port of entry don't face.
Federal Account Executive TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Federal Account Executive role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, Federal Account Executive positions typically qualify under the USMCA Management Consultant category, provided your duties involve advising federal agency clients, managing government contracts, or delivering strategic recommendations. The role title alone doesn't determine eligibility. CBP assesses the actual duties described in your employer's offer letter, so the framing of your responsibilities matters more than your job title.
How does TN visa sponsorship for this role compare to H-1B?
TN is almost always the faster and more predictable path for Canadian professionals in this role. There's no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and qualified applicants can receive approval at a port of entry the same day. H-1B visa requires filing months in advance, surviving a random lottery, and waiting for an October 1 start date. For Mexican citizens, TN still avoids the H-1B lottery but does require consular processing and is subject to a 5,500 annual cap.
What documents does my employer need to prepare for TN sponsorship?
Your employer needs to provide a detailed offer letter on company letterhead that specifies your job title, duties tied to a USMCA professional category, the position's temporary nature, and your compensation structure. For Mexican citizens, the employer also files a petition with USCIS. You're responsible for supplying proof of citizenship and your educational credentials, such as your degree certificate or official transcripts.
Where can I find Federal Account Executive jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface Federal Account Executive roles at employers with TN visa sponsorship history, filtering out positions where you'd need to educate HR from scratch. Focusing your search on government contractors and federal professional services firms through Migrate Mate cuts down the time you spend on roles where TN sponsorship isn't already part of the hiring process.
Can I switch employers on a TN visa if I get a better federal account role?
Yes, but TN status is employer-specific. You can't start with a new employer until they've completed a new TN filing and you've received approval, either at the port of entry for Canadians or through USCIS for Mexican citizens. There's no grace period that automatically authorizes you to work for the new employer while the new filing is pending, so coordinate your transition dates carefully with both employers.
