Align your portfolio to degree requirements
TN officers assess whether your graphic arts degree matches the role. Frame portfolio projects around formal design disciplines, typography, brand identity, UX, not general freelance work, to reinforce the specialty occupation connection at inspection.
Request a degree-specific job offer letter
Your employer's offer letter must state that a bachelor's degree in graphic arts, visual communications, or a related field is required. Generic creative role descriptions have triggered TN denials at the border, so ask HR to specify the educational requirement explicitly.
Target studios with established cross-border hiring
In-house design teams at agencies, publishing houses, and tech companies regularly sponsor Canadian and Mexican graphic artists under TN. Filter job postings by companies that list USMCA or TN as accepted work authorization to avoid lengthy employer education conversations.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-eligible roles
Searching broadly wastes time on employers unfamiliar with visa sponsorship processes. Migrate Mate surfaces graphic artist positions at employers with recent visa filings, so you spend less time explaining your visa needs and more time advancing through hiring stages.
Prepare for CBP scrutiny on job title classification
CBP officers sometimes question whether Graphic Artist qualifies as a specialty occupation if duties lean toward production or prepress work. Bring a detailed duties description showing design judgment, client-facing creative decisions, and degree-dependent skills to address this at the port of entry.
Get Mexican TN timing right from the consulate
Mexican nationals must schedule a consular appointment and cannot use the expedited CBP port-of-entry process Canadians use. Build at least four to six weeks into your start date negotiation to account for appointment availability and administrative processing.

Find Graphic Artist JobsGraphic Artist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Graphic Artist role actually qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, provided the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree in graphic arts, fine arts, or a closely related design discipline. Roles focused primarily on production tasks, file preparation, or prepress output, rather than original design and creative judgment, can face challenges at inspection. Your job offer letter must specify the degree requirement explicitly, not just list design software proficiency as the qualification.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Graphic Artist positions?
TN is faster and more predictable for Graphic Artists. There is no annual lottery, no USCIS petition waiting period for Canadians, and no annual cap to worry about outside the Mexican allocation. H-1B requires your employer to file a petition months in advance with no guarantee of selection. TN approval for Canadians can happen the same day at a port of entry, making it the more practical path for most North American design professionals.
Where can I find Graphic Artist jobs that explicitly support TN sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It surfaces graphic artist roles from employers who already understand TN visa mechanics under USMCA, so you aren't starting from zero educating hiring managers about the visa category. Filtering by TN-ready employers saves significant time compared to applying broadly and discovering sponsorship limitations late in the hiring process.
Can I switch Graphic Artist employers while on TN status?
Yes, but you must obtain a new TN authorization before starting with the new employer. You cannot simply transfer your existing status the way some other visa categories allow. Canadians can get new TN authorization at a port of entry with a qualifying offer letter from the new employer. Mexican nationals need to schedule a new consular appointment. Working for the new employer before authorization is confirmed creates a status violation.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application as a Graphic Artist?
Your employer must provide a detailed support letter on company letterhead stating your job title, a description of duties that demonstrates specialty occupation, your start date, compensation, and the specific degree requirement for the role. The letter must confirm you will be employed directly by the company, not as an independent contractor. Bring your degree credential and any transcripts that confirm your field of study, since CBP officers may review them alongside the support letter.
