Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Human Resources Assistant
Match your credentials to specialty occupation standards
TN visa status requires your HR Assistant role to demand a relevant bachelor's degree, not just prefer one. Review the job description carefully and confirm the posting explicitly requires a degree in human resources, business administration, or a directly related field before applying.
Target employers with existing TN filing experience
Mid-size and enterprise companies with in-house HR departments and dedicated legal teams process TN petitions more smoothly than small employers encountering the visa category for the first time. Prioritize roles at firms with structured onboarding for cross-border hires.
Prepare a support letter highlighting relevant job duties
Your employer's TN support letter must describe the HR Assistant duties in language that aligns with TN classification requirements for professional roles. Generic HR role descriptions may face scrutiny at the port of entry or consulate. Ask the employer to specify degree-dependent tasks like benefits administration, HRIS management, or compliance reporting.
Search for sponsorship-ready openings using Migrate Mate
Not every HR Assistant posting will surface employers open to TN sponsorship. Migrate Mate filters for companies actively hiring TN-eligible candidates, so you spend time on roles with genuine sponsorship intent rather than screening hundreds of listings manually.
Ask about E-Verify enrollment before accepting any offer
Employers hiring TN workers must verify work authorization through E-Verify. Confirm the employer is enrolled before the offer stage, not after signing. If they aren't enrolled, factor in the time needed to complete registration before your start date.
Understand how Mexican TN differs from Canadian TN at the filing stage
Canadian HR professionals can apply for TN status directly at a U.S. port of entry on the same day. Mexican nationals must schedule a consular interview, which adds several weeks to the timeline. Build that gap into your negotiated start date with the employer.
Human Resources Assistant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an HR Assistant role actually qualify for TN visa status?
It depends on how the role is structured. TN status under the USMCA requires the position to fall within a covered occupation and demand a bachelor's degree in a directly related field like human resources or business administration. If the job posting lists a degree as preferred rather than required, or if the duties don't genuinely require specialized knowledge, a USCIS officer can deny TN status at the border or consulate. The job offer letter and employer support letter have to make the degree requirement explicit.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Canadian and Mexican HR professionals?
TN is significantly more accessible for HR Assistant roles than H-1B visa. There's no annual lottery, no waiting period, and Canadians can receive TN status at the port of entry on the same day they apply. H-1B requires an employer to register you in a random lottery each spring, and cap-subject slots are limited. TN status is also renewable indefinitely in three-year increments as long as you maintain a qualifying employer relationship, making it a more predictable path for cross-border HR careers.
How can I find HR Assistant jobs where the employer will sponsor my TN visa?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. Most general job boards don't filter by TN sponsorship willingness, so you end up applying to roles where the employer has never considered hiring across the border. Migrate Mate surfaces HR Assistant openings from employers with demonstrated TN sponsorship intent, which cuts out the wasted applications and lets you focus your search on employers already set up to hire Canadian and Mexican professionals.
Can I change HR employers on TN status without losing work authorization?
Yes, but you need a new TN approval before starting with the new employer. TN status is employer-specific, so your authorization ends with that job relationship. Canadians can typically apply at the border with the new employer's offer letter and support documentation and receive same-day approval. Mexican nationals need to schedule a new consular appointment. Plan for this gap when negotiating your start date with a new employer.
What documents does my employer need to prepare for my TN application?
Your employer needs to provide a signed support letter on company letterhead that describes your HR Assistant role, explains how the position qualifies as a specialty occupation under USMCA, confirms the degree requirement, and states your start date and compensation. You'll also need proof of your qualifying degree, your passport, and the USCIS TN checklist documents. Mexican nationals additionally need a DS-160 form and consular appointment confirmation. Migrate Mate can help structure the employer letter to meet USCIS scrutiny standards.
