Align your degree to project management
TN visa eligibility for Project Assistant roles depends on CBP accepting your credentials as meeting a qualifying category. A degree in business administration, engineering, or a related technical field strengthens your case over a general studies credential.
Request a support letter before applying
Your employer's TN support letter must describe your duties, confirm specialty occupation status, and state the position is temporary. Missing or vague letters are the top reason CBP officers ask additional questions at the border.
Target employers with active project portfolios
Construction firms, engineering consultancies, and IT services companies regularly hire Project Assistants and understand TN sponsorship logistics. Employers running multi-phase projects are more likely to commit to the temporary nature TN requires.
Clarify your role scope during the offer stage
Negotiate a job description that emphasizes coordination, scheduling, and stakeholder reporting rather than purely administrative tasks. CBP scrutinizes Project Assistant titles, so duties framed around professional project oversight support your TN classification.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Search Migrate Mate to identify Project Assistant roles where employers have confirmed TN sponsorship, cutting out the guesswork of cold-applying and later discovering a company won't support your visa status.
Prepare for same-day status at the Canadian border
Canadian citizens can obtain TN status at a land port of entry or preclearance airport without scheduling a consulate appointment. Bring your support letter, degree transcripts or credentials, and passport to avoid delays at inspection.
Project Assistant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Project Assistant role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
It can, but CBP has discretion. Project Assistant roles qualify most reliably under categories like Engineer or Management Consultant when your duties involve professional-level coordination tied to your degree field. Purely administrative or clerical project support is less likely to clear inspection. Your employer's support letter must connect your specific duties to a recognized USMCA professional category.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Project Assistant positions?
TN has no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and can be obtained at the border in a single day, making it far more accessible than H-1B visa for qualifying roles. H-1B requires a petitions process and lottery selection. The trade-off is that TN is nonimmigrant intent, meaning it doesn't support a green card pathway the way H-1B can.
Where can I find Project Assistant jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals searching for U.S. roles with confirmed TN sponsorship. Rather than filtering through job postings where sponsorship status is unclear, Migrate Mate surfaces employers who have indicated willingness to support TN applicants for roles like Project Assistant.
Can Mexican citizens get TN status for Project Assistant jobs the same way Canadians can?
No. Mexican citizens must apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate in Mexico rather than presenting at the border. The consulate issues a TN visa stamp, and entry is then processed by CBP. Processing timelines depend on consulate workload and appointment availability. The professional category and documentation requirements are otherwise identical to the Canadian process.
How long does TN sponsorship last for a Project Assistant, and can it be renewed?
TN status is granted in three-year increments with no statutory limit on renewals, as long as the underlying employment remains temporary in nature. Your employer can support a renewal by filing a new I-129 petition or you can travel and reenter at the border. Each renewal requires updated documentation confirming the role still qualifies under a USMCA professional category.
