Align your credentials to U.S. HR standards
CBP officers assess whether your degree maps to the HR Manager role. A degree in industrial relations, organizational behavior, or business administration with an HR concentration satisfies the specialty occupation requirement just as cleanly as a dedicated HR degree.
Target employers with recent visa filing experience
Search Migrate Mate's database of employers with recent visa filings to identify companies experienced with work visa sponsorship for HR Manager positions. Employers already familiar with visa sponsorship processes move faster and are typically more streamlined in supporting TN visa applications at the port of entry or consulate.
Clarify your nationality's entry process before applying
Canadian citizens can have TN status approved at the port of entry without a consular appointment. Mexican nationals must obtain a TN visa stamp at a U.S. consulate first. Clarify which pathway applies so your employer understands the correct filing sequence.
Frame your offer letter around HR Manager duties precisely
The offer letter is your primary document at the border or consulate. It must describe duties that match the USMCA's HR Manager category, including staffing, employee relations, and policy development. Vague language like 'people operations support' can trigger additional scrutiny.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring HR Manager roles
Search Migrate Mate to find Human Resources Manager jobs where employers have confirmed TN visa sponsorship. Filtering by sponsorship status removes the guesswork of cold-applying to companies unfamiliar with the USMCA professional categories.
Negotiate employer-paid visa support letter costs upfront
Employers typically cover visa-related costs when sponsoring TN workers. Confirm before signing that your employer will handle the support letter preparation and any associated fees, and get that commitment in writing alongside your offer letter.
Human Resources Manager TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an HR Manager role qualify for a TN visa?
Yes, Human Resources Manager is a listed USMCA professional category. You need a bachelor's degree in human resources, business administration, or a closely related field, and your job duties must center on workforce planning, employee relations, compensation, or HR policy development. Generalist people operations titles can qualify if the underlying duties align with the defined category.
How does TN compare to H-1B for HR Manager positions?
TN has no annual cap and no lottery for Canadian citizens, so you can start any time of year. H-1B visa selection is random and limited to 85,000 slots annually, with results typically known months before an October start date. For HR Managers who qualify under USMCA, TN is faster, cheaper, and far more predictable than waiting on H-1B lottery outcomes.
Where can I find HR Manager jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN visa job seekers and filters listings by employers with recent visa filings. General job boards mix sponsored and non-sponsored roles without distinction, which wastes time on applications to employers unfamiliar with work visa sponsorship. Starting with employers experienced in visa sponsorship—who've demonstrated this through recent filings—cuts that friction significantly.
Can I switch HR Manager employers while on TN status?
Yes, but you cannot start with the new employer until the new TN is approved. Canadian citizens can request a new TN at the port of entry with the new employer's support letter and proof of eligibility (such as a job offer and documentation of your qualifications). Mexican nationals must return to a U.S. consulate for a new visa stamp. There is no portability provision under TN the way there is under H-1B, so plan the timing carefully with your new employer.
What documents does my employer need to prepare for a TN HR Manager filing?
Your employer must prepare a support letter before you apply at a U.S. consulate (if Mexican) or present it at the border/port of entry (if Canadian). The support package includes an offer letter specifying your HR Manager duties, your degree credential, and proof that the role qualifies under USMCA. Migrate Mate connects you with employers experienced with visa sponsorship, reducing the risk of delays from incomplete documentation on their end.
