Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Medical Laboratory Scientist
Verify your credential meets USMCA requirements
TN visa classification for Medical Laboratory Scientist requires a baccalaureate degree in medical technology or a life science. A degree in a loosely related field like general biology without clinical laboratory coursework can trigger a CBP officer's scrutiny at the border.
Target labs with recent visa sponsorship experience
Hospital systems, reference laboratories, and academic medical centers are experienced with visa sponsorship and have HR processes in place to prepare TN support letters. Independent physician-owned clinics often lack the infrastructure to draft a qualifying TN support letter on short notice.
Search role-specific TN sponsorship jobs on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters Medical Laboratory Scientist listings by TN visa sponsorship, so you're not sorting through postings that exclude international candidates. Use it to surface employers who have already committed to sponsoring your TN status.
Get your support letter reviewed before the border
Your employer's support letter must state your job title, duties, salary, and that the role requires a medical technologist. A letter describing generic laboratory duties without linking them to the USMCA occupational category gives CBP grounds to deny entry on the spot.
Understand the Mexican national cap and consular route
Mexican citizens are subject to a 5,500 annual TN cap and must apply at a U.S. consulate rather than a port of entry. Factor in consular appointment wait times when negotiating your start date with the employer.
Document any licensure requirement by state before accepting an offer
Several states require Medical Laboratory Scientists to hold a state license independently of federal CLIA certification. Confirm whether your destination state mandates licensure, since an unlicensed professional can't legally perform high-complexity testing even with a valid TN status.
Medical Laboratory Scientist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Medical Laboratory Scientist qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Medical Laboratory Technologist is an explicitly listed USMCA occupational category, and CBP accepts the title Medical Laboratory Scientist as falling within it when the role requires a baccalaureate degree in medical technology or a life science. Your employer's support letter must clearly map your duties and degree to that category.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Medical Laboratory Scientist roles?
TN has no lottery, no annual cap for Canadian citizens, and can be obtained at a Canadian port of entry on your start date. H-1B visa requires employer sponsorship months in advance, lottery selection, and USCIS petition approval. For most Medical Laboratory Scientists with a qualifying degree, TN is faster and far less dependent on timing or luck.
Where can I find Medical Laboratory Scientist jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN visa job seekers and filters listings by sponsorship status, so you can find Medical Laboratory Scientist roles where employers have already agreed to support TN applications. Searching general job boards often surfaces postings that exclude candidates requiring visa sponsorship without clearly stating so.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your employer must provide a signed support letter on company letterhead that includes your job title, a description of duties, your salary, the length of employment, and a statement that the position requires a medical technologist under USMCA. You'll also need your degree credentials. Canadian citizens present these at the port of entry; Mexican citizens submit them to a U.S. consulate.
Can I change employers while working as a Medical Laboratory Scientist on TN status?
Yes, but your TN status is employer-specific. You must obtain a new TN approval tied to the new employer before you begin working there. Canadian citizens can get a new TN at a port of entry, while Mexican nationals need to apply at a consulate. Working for a new employer before the new TN is approved puts your status at risk.
