Secure state licensure before applying
Most U.S. hospitals and health systems won't file TN visa paperwork until you hold an active medical license or a written licensure eligibility letter from the state board. Start the licensing process in your target state as early as possible.
Distinguish your Canadian from Mexican TN pathway
Canadian citizens can request TN status directly at a land port or pre-clearance airport with no prior approval needed. Mexican citizens must schedule a consular appointment and obtain the TN visa stamp before entering, which adds several weeks to your timeline.
Target hospital systems with active J-1 waiver programs
Health systems that recruit physicians through J-1 visa waiver programs are already set up to navigate federal and state sponsorship requirements. They understand physician immigration paperwork and are far less likely to reject TN sponsorship due to unfamiliarity with the process.
Search for sponsoring OB/GYN roles using Migrate Mate
Filter OB/GYN Physician openings by TN visa sponsorship directly on Migrate Mate so you only see employers who have confirmed they'll support your status. This removes the guesswork of approaching practices that have never sponsored a visa.
Confirm your offer letter meets USCIS physician criteria
Your offer letter must specify the OB/GYN title, full-time duties, and that a medical degree is required for the role. Vague letters citing general clinical duties without linking them to your specialty can trigger a denial at the port of entry or consulate.
Clarify employer E-Verify enrollment before signing
USCIS requires E-Verify participation for employers sponsoring certain visa categories, and many hospital credentialing offices won't finalize your start date until your work authorization is confirmed. Ask your HR contact whether the hiring entity, not just the parent system, is enrolled.
OB/GYN Physician TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an OB/GYN Physician role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Physicians are explicitly listed as a qualifying occupation under the USMCA TN category. To qualify, your position must require a medical degree and your duties must align with the specialty you're being hired for. A general administrative or research-only physician role could face scrutiny if it doesn't require active clinical practice in OB/GYN.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for OB/GYN Physicians?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so you can start the process as soon as you have a job offer rather than waiting for an annual selection cycle. H-1B visa requires employer sponsorship months in advance and entry depends on lottery selection. For Mexican citizens, TN still requires consular processing but avoids the lottery entirely, making it a more predictable path to U.S. practice.
Do I need a U.S. medical license before my employer files for TN status?
Most employers require either an active license or documented eligibility from the state medical board before initiating TN paperwork. Some states issue a temporary permit that can satisfy this requirement for new arrivals, but you'll need to confirm with your specific state board. Without some form of licensure documentation, many credentialing offices will put your start date on hold.
Where can I find OB/GYN Physician jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search OB/GYN Physician openings filtered by TN visa sponsorship, so you can focus on employers who have confirmed they'll support your status. This is especially useful if you're a Canadian or Mexican physician who doesn't want to spend time approaching practices unfamiliar with TN requirements or unwilling to sponsor.
Can I switch employers while on a TN visa as an OB/GYN Physician?
Yes, but you can't simply transfer your existing TN to a new employer the way H-1B portability works. You need to obtain a new TN authorization for the new position before or when you start. Canadian physicians can often handle this at a port of entry with the new offer letter, while Mexican physicians must return to a consulate for a new visa stamp.
