Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a People Operations Specialist
Align your degree to the role
TN visa approval depends on your degree field matching your People Operations duties. A business administration or HR degree maps cleanly to Management Consultant. A psychology or social science degree may require you to frame your role differently to CBP.
Request a support letter before signing
Ask your prospective employer for a TN support letter detailing your job duties, degree requirement, and employment terms before you accept the offer. CBP reviews this letter at the port of entry, and vague language is the most common reason for refusal.
Target companies with HR technology teams
People Operations roles at companies running HRIS platforms like Workday or SAP tend to have clearer specialty occupation framing, which strengthens your TN application. Employers in these environments are also more likely to understand and support TN sponsorship.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for TN-ready employers
Search Migrate Mate to find People Operations Specialist openings at employers with recent visa filings and sponsorship experience. Filtering by employers experienced with work visa processes saves you from negotiating the visa process with HR teams encountering it for the first time.
Prepare for Mexican citizens' consular timeline
If you're a Mexican citizen, build at least four to six weeks into your start date for consular appointment scheduling. TN processing for Mexican nationals requires an in-person interview, unlike Canadian citizens who can be admitted at the border same-day.
Separate your offer letter from your support letter
Your offer letter covers compensation and start date. Your TN support letter covers the professional classification argument. Submit them as distinct documents to CBP. Combining them into one document often leaves the classification rationale buried under employment terms.
People Operations Specialist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a People Operations Specialist role qualify for a TN visa?
It can, but the qualifying category depends on your specific duties and degree. Most People Operations Specialists apply under the Management Consultant category, which requires a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in a relevant field like business administration, human resources, or organizational psychology. If your role involves workforce counseling or employee assistance programs, a Social Worker classification may also apply. CBP makes the final determination at entry.
How does TN compare to H-1B for People Operations Specialist roles?
TN is significantly more accessible for Canadian and Mexican citizens in this role. There is no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and no lengthy USCIS petition process. H-1B visa requires employer sponsorship through a lottery with roughly a one-in-four selection rate. TN approval happens at the port of entry for Canadians, often the same day you travel. For a role where the specialty occupation argument is already established, TN removes months of processing uncertainty.
Can I switch People Operations employers on a TN visa?
Yes, but your TN authorization is tied to a specific employer. Before you start with a new company, you need a new TN admission reflecting the new employer's details. Canadian citizens can do this at any port of entry. Mexican citizens must schedule a new consular appointment. Working for a new employer before completing this step puts you out of status, even if your TN hasn't expired.
Where can I find People Operations Specialist jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals looking for U.S. roles with TN visa sponsorship. You can filter People Operations Specialist openings by employers who have a track record of sponsoring TN visas, which reduces the time spent educating HR teams on a visa they may not have processed before.
What happens if CBP questions my People Operations role at the border?
CBP officers have discretion to question the professional classification of your role if your duties sound administrative rather than consultative. Bring a detailed support letter that maps your specific responsibilities to the Management Consultant definition, along with your degree transcripts and any professional certifications. If you're refused, you can reapply with stronger documentation. Refusal at the border is not a permanent bar to future TN applications.
