Verify your license transfers across borders
A Canadian P.Eng. or Mexican título de ingeniero doesn't automatically satisfy U.S. state licensure requirements. Confirm whether your target employer needs a U.S. Professional Engineer stamp before you apply, since some roles require state-issued licensure as a condition of hire.
Align your degree field with the posted role
TN visa eligibility requires your degree discipline to match the engineering category of the position. A mechanical engineering degree won't support a TN for a purely civil role, so target postings where your exact discipline is named in the job description.
Request a detailed offer letter before the border
Canadians apply for TN status directly at a port of entry, so your offer letter must specify your role, discipline, wage, and that a baccalaureate degree in engineering is required. Vague or HR-generic letters are the most common reason CBP officers ask follow-up questions.
Target employers experienced with visa sponsorship
Firms with recent visa filings for engineering roles have already developed processes for sponsoring skilled workers. Filtering by employers experienced with work visa sponsorship narrows your search to companies familiar with hiring internationally—and more likely to navigate the TN visa process smoothly, whether that means preparing a support letter for your port-of-entry presentation or consulate application.
Use Migrate Mate to find engineering roles at sponsors
Search Migrate Mate to surface Professional Engineer positions at employers with recent visa filings who have experience sponsoring work visas for engineers. Filtering by role and employer visa sponsorship experience helps you identify postings where the company has demonstrated capability supporting visa-sponsored professionals. For TN applicants, this employer experience signals familiarity with visa sponsorship processes and support letter preparation.
Prepare for the Mexican TN annual cap early in the year
Mexican nationals are limited to 5,500 TN visas annually. If you're applying mid-year, confirm with your employer whether allocation is still available, since consular appointments for Mexican TN applicants require USCIS Form I-129 filed well before the cap closes.
Professional Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does my Canadian P.Eng. or Mexican engineering license qualify me for TN status as a Professional Engineer?
Your foreign engineering credential qualifies you for TN classification if you hold a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in an engineering discipline. The TN category doesn't require a U.S. Professional Engineer license. However, some employers require a state PE stamp as a job condition independent of immigration status, so clarify this with each employer before applying.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Professional Engineer roles?
For Canadian engineers, TN is almost always the faster path. There's no annual lottery, no cap, and Canadians can apply at any port of entry on the day of travel. H-1B visa selection is lottery-based with an April start date and months of processing time. Mexican engineers face a 5,500-annual-cap on TN visas and must file Form I-129 through USCIS, which narrows the speed advantage.
Where can I find Professional Engineer jobs where the employer already understands TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Professional Engineer roles at employers with documented TN or H-1B sponsorship history. This filters out companies that have never processed a work visa before, which significantly reduces the chance of an offer falling apart because the hiring manager didn't know TN sponsorship was required.
What documents do I need to bring to the port of entry as a Canadian engineer applying for TN status?
You'll need a detailed employer offer letter, your engineering degree certificate and transcripts, and your Canadian passport. If your degree is in a field adjacent to the posted role, a credential evaluation from a recognized body can help CBP confirm the match. Bring physical originals of everything, not only digital copies, since officers can't access cloud storage at the border.
Can I switch employers after starting a TN-sponsored Professional Engineer job in the United States?
Yes, but you must secure a new TN before starting work with the new employer. Canadians can do this at a port of entry with the new employer's offer letter. Mexican nationals need USCIS to approve a new Form I-129 petition before the job change takes effect. Working for an employer not listed on your TN approval is a violation of status.
