Confirm your license transfers across state lines
Most U.S. states require a separate dental hygienist license, even if you hold Canadian or Mexican credentials. Research the specific state board requirements before accepting an offer, since your TN visa approval depends on demonstrating licensure or eligibility.
Decode the offer letter before signing
Your TN petition lives or dies on the employer's offer letter. It must explicitly name the Registered Dental Hygienist occupation, your specific clinical duties, and confirm full-time or part-time hours, since vague letters are a common CBP rejection trigger.
Target multi-location dental groups over solo practices
Larger dental service organizations have dedicated HR teams familiar with TN sponsorship workflows. Solo practitioners rarely navigate immigration paperwork independently, which creates delays and misfiled documents that stall your start date.
Use Migrate Mate to filter experienced visa sponsors
Searching broadly wastes time on practices that have never sponsored foreign-trained hygienists. Migrate Mate lets you filter specifically for dental employers with recent visa filings, so your applications go where sponsorship experience exists and approvals actually happen.
Prepare credential documents before you start applying
CBP officers at the Canadian border process TN applications on the spot and can request transcripts, NDEB credentials, or a CDHO certificate of standing immediately. Having certified copies ready prevents same-day denials and unnecessary secondary inspections.
Understand the three-year renewal cycle for planning purposes
TN status is granted for up to three years and is indefinitely renewable. Build your employment agreements around this cycle, ensuring your employer commits to renewal sponsorship so you don't face gaps in authorization mid-employment contract.
Registered Dental Hygienist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Registered Dental Hygienist qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Registered Dental Hygienist is explicitly listed as a qualifying TN occupation under the USMCA treaty appendix covering medical and allied health professions. You need a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree, or a state or provincial license, plus a job offer from a U.S. dental employer documenting clinical hygienist duties. General dental assistant roles do not qualify under this category.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for dental hygienists?
The TN visa is significantly more practical for dental hygienists than the H-1B. There is no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and Canadians can apply directly at the border without a pre-filed USCIS petition. H-1B registration opens once per year in March with selection rates well below 50%, meaning most applicants wait years for approval. TN processing at the port of entry typically takes a few hours.
Can a Mexican dental hygienist get TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, but the process differs from the Canadian pathway. Mexican nationals must apply at a U.S. consulate in Mexico and obtain TN visa stamp approval before entering, rather than requesting status at the border. Mexico also has an annual TN allocation cap. The qualifying credential and job offer requirements are identical: a valid license and a detailed employer offer letter confirming Registered Dental Hygienist duties.
What should I look for in an employer willing to sponsor TN status?
Use Migrate Mate to identify dental employers with a documented history of TN visa sponsorship rather than cold-applying across the market. Look for dental groups with dedicated HR or office management staff, since they're equipped to draft compliant offer letters and coordinate with immigration counsel. Confirm the employer will support renewals before your first TN period expires, as gaps in sponsorship create authorization problems.
Does my Canadian or Mexican dental hygienist license satisfy U.S. state board requirements?
Not automatically. Most U.S. states require passing the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination and a state or regional clinical board exam independently of your home country credentials. Some states accept credential evaluation and examination equivalency reviews. You can hold TN status before completing state licensure in some cases if the offer letter documents that licensure is in progress, but confirm this arrangement with your employer and an immigration professional before relying on it.
