Verify your commercial license transfers correctly
Your Canadian or Mexican commercial driver's license doesn't automatically satisfy U.S. state CDL requirements. Research the specific state endorsements required for school bus operations before accepting any offer, since your employer's TN filing depends on your license being valid.
Target school districts with E-Verify enrollment
School districts enrolled in E-Verify have established systems for verifying work authorization, which signals they've hired foreign nationals before. Prioritize public districts in states with federal contracting obligations, since E-Verify enrollment is mandatory for federal contractors.
Request a support letter before signing your offer
Your employer will need to prepare a support letter documenting your role, qualifications, and TN eligibility before your application moves forward. Ask HR to confirm they've begun preparing this documentation before you give notice to a current employer, since preparation time may affect your start date. For Canadian applicants, you'll present this letter at the U.S. port of entry; for Mexican applicants, your employer will submit it to the U.S. consulate as part of your visa application.
Use Migrate Mate to find districts sponsoring TN visas
Searching for school districts willing to sponsor TN visas is harder than it sounds. Migrate Mate filters employers by recent visa filing activity, letting you focus your applications on districts experienced with work visa sponsorship. These employers are more likely to understand the straightforward TN process for Canadian and Mexican drivers.
Prepare a credential equivalency letter upfront
Canadian and Mexican driver training programs aren't always recognized outright by U.S. school districts. A credential evaluation letter from an accredited evaluator documenting equivalency to U.S. standards strengthens your application and reduces back-and-forth during the hiring process.
Understand the 3-year TN period and renewal timing
TN status for School Bus Drivers is granted in increments of up to three years and can be renewed indefinitely. Coordinate with your employer's HR team at least 90 days before expiration so the renewal petition reaches USCIS before your current status lapses.

Find School Bus Driver JobsSchool Bus Driver TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a School Bus Driver role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, School Bus Driver positions can qualify under the USMCA's TN category when the role involves professional-level duties and the employer can demonstrate the specialty nature of the work. The classification typically falls under transportation-related professional categories. For Canadians, your employer will prepare a support letter outlining your qualifications and the role's requirements, which you'll present at the U.S. port of entry. For Mexicans, your employer will prepare a support letter for submission with your TN application at a U.S. consulate. The specialty nature of the role is the deciding factor at adjudication.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for School Bus Drivers?
TN has two major advantages over H-1B for this role. There's no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so your application is adjudicated on its merits rather than selected by chance. Canadians can also apply directly at a port of entry without waiting for a consular appointment. H-1B requires a full petition cycle and is subject to the annual 85,000-slot cap, making it far less predictable for any applicant.
Where can I find school districts that sponsor TN visas for drivers?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It surfaces employers with recent visa filing experience, so you're not cold-applying to districts that have never navigated work visa sponsorship. Filtering by school districts experienced with visa sponsorship saves significant time and connects you with employers who already understand the support letter and port-of-entry/consulate processes for Canadian and Mexican nationals.
What documents do I need to bring to a TN application as a Canadian citizen?
Canadian citizens applying at the port of entry typically need a valid Canadian passport, a support letter from the employer detailing your job duties and qualifications, proof of your commercial driving credentials, and evidence that the role meets TN professional standards. USCIS officers adjudicate these applications on the spot, so complete documentation matters. Incomplete packages are the most common reason for delays or refusals.
Can my Mexican employer apply for a TN visa on my behalf before I have a CDL?
No. The TN petition requires that you currently hold the qualifications the role demands, including any required commercial driver's license with school bus endorsements. Filing before you have a valid CDL means the petition will lack a required credential, creating grounds for denial. Obtain your license equivalency documentation first, then coordinate with your employer on the support letter and port of entry or consulate appointment timeline.
