Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Social Work Assistant
Verify your degree meets TN requirements
TN classification for Social Work Assistants requires a bachelor's degree in social work specifically, not a related field like psychology or sociology. Gather official transcripts and, if your degree is from a Canadian or Mexican institution, confirm it's recognized as equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree before applying.
Target employers with active LCSW supervision structures
Social work assistant roles require direct supervision by a licensed clinical social worker. Hospitals, community health centers, and county human services agencies already have these supervision structures built in, making them far more likely to understand and support TN sponsorship for this occupation category.
Search TN-sponsored roles through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Social Work Assistant positions by TN visa sponsorship, so you're only applying to employers who've already committed to sponsoring this visa category. It removes the guesswork of cold-applying to roles where sponsorship support is unclear.
Ask employers about state licensure requirements upfront
Many U.S. states require social work assistants to hold a state-issued credential before starting work. Raise this in the offer stage, not after signing, since some licensure processes require an SSN or prior U.S. work authorization that you won't have until your TN is approved.
Prepare a precise job offer letter for CBP review
Canadian applicants present their TN documentation directly at the border. CBP officers will scrutinize the offer letter, so it must explicitly state the Social Worker TN category, your specific duties, your degree field, and the employment start date. Vague letters are a common reason for denial or delay.
Understand how USCIS handles TN renewals for this role
Mexican citizens filing through a U.S. consulate and Canadians renewing via USCIS must show continued specialty occupation employment each renewal cycle. Document your caseload responsibilities and supervision structure annually so renewals reflect the same qualifying duties as your original approval.

Find Social Work Assistant JobsSocial Work Assistant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Social Work Assistant role actually qualify for TN visa classification?
Yes, Social Work Assistants qualify under the Social Worker category of the USMCA professional occupations list, provided the role requires and you hold a bachelor's degree in social work. Roles with titles like case aide or social services technician may not qualify if the employer can't demonstrate the position requires that specific degree.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for Social Work Assistant roles?
TN is significantly more accessible for this role. There's no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and Canadian applicants can receive approval at a port of entry the same day they present their documents. H-1B requires employer sponsorship months in advance and offers no guarantee of selection, making TN the practical first choice for Canadian and Mexican social work professionals.
Where can I find Social Work Assistant jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN and other work visa job searches, letting you filter Social Work Assistant roles by sponsorship type so you're only seeing employers who've already indicated they'll support TN classification. This saves time compared to applying broadly and raising the visa question late in the process.
Can I work as a Social Work Assistant on TN status if my state requires licensure?
You can hold TN status and work in the role, but some states require a state-issued social work credential before you can practice independently. Confirm whether your target state has pre-employment licensure requirements and whether those can be satisfied during or after the TN approval process. Some licensure boards require proof of employment, creating a sequencing issue worth resolving with your employer before your start date.
What happens to my TN status if my supervising social worker leaves the organization?
Your TN status is tied to your employer and the qualifying job duties, not to a specific supervisor. Losing your supervising LCSW doesn't automatically invalidate your status, but if the supervision structure changes and your role no longer meets the Social Worker category definition, that could affect renewals. Notify your employer's HR team immediately so they can document continuity of the qualifying occupation.
