Verify your PT license transfers cleanly
Most U.S. states require FSBPT licensure by endorsement before a sports PT can practice. Start the reciprocity application three to four months before your target start date, since processing delays are the most common reason TN visa offers fall through.
Target employers with sports medicine programs
Hospital sports medicine departments, university athletic programs, and orthopedic specialty groups file TN documentation routinely. These employers understand the USMCA Physical Therapist category and won't confuse it with the H-1B visa process during hiring.
Request a support letter that names your specialty
Your employer's TN support letter must describe the role as requiring a PT degree and reference sports-specific duties. A generic letter listing only 'physical therapy services' has drawn additional questioning at the Canadian land border.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers fast
Identifying which sports PT employers are actively open to TN candidates takes time. Migrate Mate surfaces those roles directly so you're not filtering through listings where sponsorship is unclear or unavailable for your visa category.
Understand the Mexican TN cap before you negotiate
Mexican citizens have a 5,500 annual TN allocation under USMCA. Confirm your employer knows this figure and is prepared to file through a U.S. consulate in Mexico, since Mexican nationals can't self-petition at a land border the way Canadians can.
Align your start date with FSBPT score release
NPTE results are released on fixed dates. If your license is pending exam results, build that window into your offer negotiation. Starting before your license is active invalidates your TN status and creates compliance exposure for your employer.
Sports Physical Therapist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Sports Physical Therapist role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Sports Physical Therapists qualify under the USMCA's Physical Therapist category, which is one of the explicitly listed TN professions. The role must require a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in physical therapy, and you must hold a valid state PT license in the state where you'll practice.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for sports PT roles?
TN sponsorship has no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and no USCIS petition requirement for Canadian applicants crossing at a land border. H-1B requires employer sponsorship months in advance, subjects you to an annual lottery with roughly one-in-four odds, and involves significantly longer processing. For Canadian sports PTs, TN is a faster and more predictable path.
Where can I find Sports Physical Therapist jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most general job boards don't filter by visa category, which means you spend hours screening listings where sponsorship isn't available. Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN visa job seekers and surfaces Sports Physical Therapist roles from employers already open to sponsoring Canadian and Mexican candidates.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your employer must provide a signed support letter on company letterhead that describes the position title, your specific duties, the degree and licensure required, the employment duration, and confirmation that you'll be employed in a professional capacity. For sports PT roles, the letter should explicitly reference sports medicine or athletic rehabilitation duties to match the Physical Therapist USMCA category.
Can a Mexican sports physical therapist apply for TN status at a land border like Canadian applicants?
No. Mexican nationals must apply for TN status through a U.S. consulate in Mexico and receive a TN visa stamp before traveling to the United States. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a port of entry with their employer's support letter and supporting credentials, without going through a consulate or submitting a USCIS petition.
