Match your degree field to the role
TN visa approval requires a direct connection between your bachelor's degree and Technical Writer duties. A degree in English, communications, journalism, or technical communication works cleanly. A computer science degree paired with documentation experience needs a stronger employer letter explaining the link.
Request a support letter before accepting
Ask your employer to draft the TN support letter before you sign an offer. It must name your specific job title, describe duties tied to technical writing, confirm the prearranged job, and state your salary and intended duration.
Target companies with active technical documentation needs
Software, aerospace, defense, and medical device companies maintain large documentation teams and routinely hire Technical Writers on TN status. Filter your search to industries where regulatory or compliance requirements create steady demand for structured technical content.
Use Migrate Mate to find employer-sponsored technical writer roles
Search Migrate Mate to identify Technical Writer openings at employers experienced with visa sponsorship. Targeting companies with recent work visa filings means hiring managers already understand employment-based immigration, so you'll spend less time explaining the TN process.
Clarify contract versus full-time status early
TN visas cover both direct employment and certain contract arrangements, but the employer of record must be the entity sponsoring you. If you're placed through a staffing agency, confirm which entity issues your support letter and controls your work assignments before the offer stage.
Prepare for Canadian border entry with a complete packet
Canadian citizens can obtain TN status at a port of entry without advance filing. Bring the signed employer support letter, your degree certificate, transcripts, and a copy of the job description. CBP officers can deny entry if documentation doesn't clearly establish specialty occupation.
Technical Writer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Technical Writer qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Technical Writer appears on the USMCA TN occupational list. To qualify, you must hold a bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as English, communications, technical communication, or a related discipline, and your employer must document that the position requires that level of specialized knowledge.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Technical Writer roles?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and no USCIS petition filing requirement. H-1B visa selection is random and limited to 85,000 slots per fiscal year. For Canadian Technical Writers, TN approval can happen the same day at a port of entry. Mexican citizens use consular processing, which takes longer but still avoids the lottery entirely.
Where can I find Technical Writer jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking TN-eligible roles. You can search for Technical Writer positions at employers who are familiar with TN sponsorship, which reduces friction during the hiring process and avoids offers that fall through when an employer learns they'd need to support a visa.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your employer must provide a signed support letter on company letterhead that confirms your job title as Technical Writer, describes your specific duties, states that the position requires a bachelor's degree, confirms prearranged employment, and lists your compensation and intended period of employment. This letter is the core of your TN application whether you apply at the border or through a consulate.
Can I switch employers after getting TN status as a Technical Writer?
Yes, but you cannot start working for a new employer under your existing TN status. Canadian citizens must obtain a new TN at a port of entry with a new employer support letter. Mexican citizens must apply for a new TN at a U.S. consulate. Plan for a processing gap between your last day at the current employer and your start date at the new one.
