Train Engineer Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a train engineer in Texas?
Becoming a train engineer in Texas follows the federal path regulated by the Federal Railroad Administration under 49 CFR Part 240, which requires passing written knowledge exams, vision and hearing tests, and a territory-specific skills evaluation. There is no separate Texas state license. Most candidates start as conductors or utility workers with a Texas-based railroad, complete an employer-sponsored training program, and then qualify for engineer certification on specific rail territories operated by their carrier.
Which companies hire train engineers in Texas?
Texas train engineer roles are posted by Lockheed Martin, Infosys, and NTT DATA and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Texas is home to major freight corridors and commuter operations, making it one of the more consistently active states for engineer hiring throughout the year.
Which Texas cities have the most train engineer jobs?
Plano, Fort Worth, and Frisco have the most train engineer openings in Texas. Houston anchors the market as a major freight and intermodal hub with deep Union Pacific and BNSF operations, Dallas-Fort Worth drives volume through both Class I freight traffic and the Trinity Railway Express commuter line, and San Antonio sees consistent activity tied to its position on key north-south freight routes.
Are there remote train engineer jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they are rare. Train engineering is a hands-on, safety-critical role that requires the engineer to be physically present in the cab, so the vast majority of positions are entirely on-site. About 50% of train engineer openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those tend to be training coordination or dispatch-adjacent roles rather than active locomotive operations.
How can I get hired as a train engineer in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a conductor or trainee role with a Texas-based freight carrier, since Class I railroads like Union Pacific and BNSF both run structured conductor training programs out of Texas terminals that serve as the direct pipeline into engineer qualification. Starting in a yard clerk, carman, or utility employee role at a Texas rail facility also builds the operational familiarity that hiring managers look for. Holding a commercial driver's license and a clean safety record gives candidates a meaningful edge during the screening process.
Where can I find and apply to train engineer jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to train engineer jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings updated regularly. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level, territory, and preferred carrier, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
