Transportation Engineer Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a transportation engineer in Texas?
The standard path in Texas is to earn a bachelor's degree in civil or transportation engineering from an accredited program, then pursue licensure through the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Candidates first pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam to become an Engineer in Training, then accumulate qualifying experience before sitting for the Professional Engineering exam. PE licensure is required for signing and sealing engineering documents and is often a condition of advancement at Texas transportation firms and agencies.
How much do transportation engineers make in Texas?
Transportation engineers in Texas earn a median of about $96,860 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,240 for the lowest 10% to over $164,330 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire transportation engineers in Texas?
Employers hiring transportation engineers in Texas right now include HDR, Freese and Nichols, and Garver, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's scale and ongoing infrastructure investment support a broad mix of public agencies, large engineering consultancies, and regional design firms with steady project backlogs across the state.
Which Texas cities have the most transportation engineer jobs?
Dallas, Austin, and Plano have the most transportation engineer openings in Texas. Houston's size and port infrastructure drive the largest share of positions, Dallas-Fort Worth's rapid suburban growth generates consistent demand for roadway and traffic work, and Austin's population surge has expanded both public agency hiring through TxDOT and private consultancy demand tied to regional mobility projects.
Are there remote transportation engineer jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. About 18% of transportation engineer openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves field visits, site coordination, and agency meetings that require a physical presence. The roles most likely to offer remote flexibility are traffic data analysis, transportation planning, and report writing positions at larger consultancies.
How can I get hired as a transportation engineer in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a design engineer or engineer-in-training role at a Texas consultancy or with TxDOT's district offices, which regularly bring on new graduates. Large firms like Kimley-Horn, AECOM, and Freese and Nichols run structured internship and new-graduate programs that often convert to full-time positions. Candidates who have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and built a portfolio through university capstone projects or internships, particularly work that references TxDOT standards, stand out in Texas hiring processes.
