Transportation Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a transportation engineer in New York?
You become a licensed transportation engineer in New York by earning a bachelor's degree in civil or transportation engineering, then passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam to become an Engineer-in-Training, and completing the required experience before sitting for the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam. Licensure is granted through the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions. A Professional Engineer license is required for signing and sealing engineering documents on public projects.
How much do transportation engineers make in New York?
Transportation engineers in New York earn a median of about $103,760 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,290 for the lowest 10% to over $169,050 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire transportation engineers in New York?
Employers hiring transportation engineers in New York right now include LaBella Associates, Stantec, and HDR, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's scale of public infrastructure investment and active transit expansion means both large engineering consultancies and state and city agencies maintain consistent openings throughout the year.
Which New York cities have the most transportation engineer jobs?
The cities with the most transportation engineer openings in New York are New York, Rochester, and Albany. New York City dominates due to the sheer volume of transit, freight, and urban road projects managed by agencies like the MTA and NYCDOT, while Buffalo and Albany attract openings tied to NYSDOT regional offices and infrastructure-focused engineering firms serving upstate corridors.
Are there remote transportation engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Transportation engineering is heavily field- and site-dependent, so fully remote positions are limited to specific analytical, planning, or modeling roles. About 23% of transportation engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those roles tend to involve traffic data analysis, transportation planning studies, or environmental documentation rather than design or construction oversight.
How can I get hired as a transportation engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to junior engineer or engineer-in-training roles at large New York engineering consultancies and public agencies, which regularly onboard new graduates. AECOM, WSP USA, and the New York City Department of Transportation run structured new-hire programs that pair early-career engineers with senior staff on active projects. Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam before applying signals readiness and gives candidates a concrete edge over those who have not yet begun the licensure process.
Where can I find and apply to transportation engineer jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to transportation engineer jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current New York openings updated in real time. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your experience and location, and apply directly to each position that fits.
