Travel Consultant Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a travel consultant in California?
Becoming a travel consultant in California typically starts with earning a high school diploma or associate degree in tourism, hospitality, or business, then completing a recognized industry certification such as the Certified Travel Associate offered through The Travel Institute. California does not require a state-issued license to work as a travel consultant, but agencies often require California Seller of Travel registration, which their employer holds. Candidates gain practical skills through training on global distribution systems and building destination knowledge.
Which companies hire travel consultants in California?
Employers hiring travel consultants in California right now include AAA Auto Club Enterprises, Automobile Club of Missouri, and Omega, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. California's large corporate headquarters, entertainment industry, and Pacific Rim trade connections create steady demand for both corporate and luxury leisure travel consultants across the state.
Which California cities have the most travel consultant jobs?
The cities with the most travel consultant openings in California are Los Angeles, Artesia, and Pasadena. Los Angeles dominates due to its entertainment industry, international business activity, and large luxury travel agencies, while San Francisco's dense corporate headquarters and Asia-Pacific business travel drive strong demand, and San Diego's tourism economy and biotech sector support a consistent base of openings.
Are there remote travel consultant jobs in California?
Yes, and more than many client-facing roles, since much of the work involves booking, researching, and communicating by phone and email rather than meeting clients in person. About 57% of travel consultant openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the shift toward virtual agency models after the industry's rapid digital transformation. Leisure travel and corporate account management roles are the segments most commonly offered on a fully remote basis.
How can I get hired as a travel consultant in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an entry-level travel coordinator or travel agent trainee role at a mid-size California agency or corporate travel management company, where on-the-job GDS training is provided. Large California employers such as AAA and American Express Global Business Travel run structured new-hire training programs that accept candidates without prior agency experience. Candidates moving from customer service, hospitality front desk, or airline reservations roles find those backgrounds transfer directly. Earning a Certified Travel Associate credential before applying gives California candidates a clear advantage over other entry-level applicants.
Where can I find and apply to travel consultant jobs in California?
You can find and apply to travel consultant jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated regularly. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
