National Sales Director Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a national sales director in California?
The most direct path in California is to build a career ladder from individual contributor to sales manager to director within a technology, life sciences, or enterprise B2B company headquartered or heavily staffed in the state. California has no state-issued license or registration specific to the national sales director role, so hiring decisions turn on a combination of a business-related bachelor's degree, a master's or MBA from a California institution for more competitive roles, and a verifiable record of leading teams and growing revenue at scale.
How much do national sales directors make in California?
National sales directors in California earn a median of about $134,910 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $64,430 for the lowest 10% to over $300,580 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire national sales directors in California?
Employers hiring national sales directors in California right now include Neurocrine Biosciences, BD, and The HEINEKEN Company, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's dense concentration of technology headquarters, major medical device manufacturers, and large consumer brand operations means demand for this role is distributed across multiple high-growth industries rather than a single sector.
Which California cities have the most national sales director jobs?
Home Office, Petaluma, and San Diego have the most national sales director openings in California. San Francisco anchors hiring in enterprise software and cloud technology, Los Angeles draws demand from media, consumer goods, and healthcare services companies, and San Diego reflects the city's strong medical device and biotech employer base, including large multinational firms with national commercial teams headquartered there.
Are there remote national sales director jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most leadership roles. About 60% of national sales director openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how many California technology and SaaS companies built distributed commercial teams during and after the pandemic. Strategic planning, pipeline management, and executive reporting functions are most likely to stay fully remote, while roles requiring in-person customer engagement or team coaching tend toward hybrid arrangements.
How can I get hired as a national sales director in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is landing an account executive or regional sales manager role at a California technology or life sciences company and building upward from there. Large employers like enterprise software firms in the Bay Area and medical device companies in San Diego and Orange County run structured sales development and leadership acceleration programs designed for high-performing contributors without director-level experience. Earning an MBA from a California business school or completing a recognized sales leadership certificate strengthens candidacy considerably and is a credential hiring managers in this market specifically look for.
Where can I find and apply to national sales director jobs in California?
You can find and apply to national sales director jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated regularly. Search by city, industry, or seniority level to narrow results to roles that match your background, then apply directly to the ones that fit without creating an account or signing up.
