Security Sales Engineer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a security sales engineer in California?
Most California employers expect a technical foundation in IT or cybersecurity combined with customer-facing experience. A bachelor's degree in computer science or information systems is the standard starting point, followed by industry certifications such as CompTIA Security+, CISSP, or vendor-specific credentials from Cisco or Palo Alto Networks. California does not require a state-issued license for this role, but demonstrated presales or solutions engineering experience in a security context is typically required before hiring.
How much do security sales engineers make in California?
Security sales engineers in California earn a median of about $139,160 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $78,850 for the lowest 10% to over $213,370 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire security sales engineers in California?
Employers hiring security sales engineers in California right now include Google, Apple, and Roblox, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. California's density of enterprise technology headquarters and large government contractors makes it one of the more consistent states for ongoing security sales engineer openings.
Which California cities have the most security sales engineer jobs?
San Francisco, San Jose, and Sunnyvale have the most security sales engineer openings in California. San Jose and the broader Bay Area anchor demand through the concentration of cybersecurity vendors and enterprise technology firms headquartered there, while Los Angeles draws openings from media, aerospace, and large financial services firms, and San Diego's defense and biotech sectors drive a steady share of the region's listings.
Are there remote security sales engineer jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most technical roles, because much of the work involves virtual product demonstrations, video-based discovery calls, and proposal development that translate well to remote settings. About 57% of security sales engineer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the field's shift toward digital-first presales. The parts of the role most commonly done remotely are product demos and technical proposal writing, while on-site visits remain common for enterprise account closings.
How can I get hired as a security sales engineer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving laterally from a technical support, network operations, or IT administrator role into a junior solutions engineer or sales engineer associate position. Large California-based technology employers including Cisco, Palo Alto Networks, and CrowdStrike run associate systems engineer and early-career presales programs that accept candidates without direct sales experience. Earning a CompTIA Security+ certification before applying signals foundational knowledge and gives candidates a concrete edge when competing against others who lack direct presales history.
