Sales Engineer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a sales engineer in California?
Most sales engineers in California start with a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a closely related technical field, which is the foundation most California employers require. California does not have a state-issued license specific to sales engineering, so the hiring path centers on combining technical education with customer-facing experience. Candidates often move into the role from software development, systems engineering, or technical support positions at California technology or manufacturing companies.
How much do sales engineers make in California?
Sales engineers in California earn a median of about $139,160 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $78,850 for the lowest 10% to over $213,370 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire sales engineers in California?
Employers hiring sales engineers in California right now include BKF Engineers, NVIDIA, and Google, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of enterprise software, semiconductor, and clean energy companies means hiring is consistent across both large multinationals and well-funded growth-stage firms headquartered throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most sales engineer jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Jose have the most sales engineer openings in California. The Bay Area dominates because of its density of enterprise software and hardware companies, while Los Angeles draws openings from aerospace, media technology, and industrial automation employers, and San Diego's strong defense and biotech sectors generate steady demand for solutions-oriented technical sales talent.
Are there remote sales engineer jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most technical roles, because sales engineers frequently work with distributed enterprise accounts that don't require daily on-site presence. About 38% of sales engineer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how common virtual product demonstrations and digital sales cycles have become. The most remote-friendly sub-areas are SaaS, cloud infrastructure, and cybersecurity solutions.
How can I get hired as a sales engineer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is transitioning from a technical support, solutions consultant, or junior software engineer role at a California technology company, where you already interact with customers around product problems. Large California employers like Cisco and Salesforce run associate solutions engineer or technical sales development programs designed for recent graduates. Building hands-on product knowledge and completing vendor certifications relevant to your target segment, such as cloud platform credentials, gives candidates a clear edge in California hiring processes.
Where can I find and apply to sales engineer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to sales engineer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from California employers across industries. Find roles that match your technical background and target market, then apply directly to each one that fits.
