Truck Driver Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a truck driver in Virginia?
To become a truck driver in Virginia, you must obtain a Commercial Driver's License through the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. The process involves passing a knowledge exam, a skills test, and a DOT physical. Most candidates complete a CDL training program at a community college or a carrier-sponsored school, then apply for entry-level driving positions. Virginia's CDL licensing follows federal standards, and endorsements for hazmat or tanker loads require additional testing.
Which companies hire truck drivers in Virginia?
Employers hiring truck drivers in Virginia right now include Ryder System, Swift Transportation, and Schneider, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's dense network of distribution centers, port facilities in Hampton Roads, and major logistics corridors along I-95 and I-81 keeps hiring activity high across both regional and national carriers.
Which Virginia cities have the most truck driver jobs?
The Virginia cities with the most truck driver openings are Roanoke, Richmond, and Virginia. Northern Virginia's proximity to major freight corridors and large retail distribution operations drives volume there, Richmond's central location along I-95 supports regional and long-haul demand, and Hampton Roads benefits from port activity at the Port of Virginia, which generates consistent freight movement jobs.
Are there remote truck driver jobs in Virginia?
Yes, but they're rare. Truck driving is an on-site, on-road role by nature, so most positions require the driver to be physically present. About 0% of truck driver openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those exceptions typically involve dispatch coordination, fleet management, or driver training roles rather than active driving.
How can I get hired as a truck driver in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a carrier-sponsored CDL training program, where companies like Amazon Logistics and regional carriers cover training costs in exchange for a driving commitment after you earn your license. Community colleges such as Piedmont Virginia Community College offer affordable CDL programs. Applying for a driver's helper or dock worker role at a distribution center is a common lateral move that puts you in front of hiring managers before your CDL is finalized.
Where can I find and apply to truck driver jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to truck driver jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your CDL class and experience level, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
