- Associate's or bachelor's degree in business, finance, or a related field
- Proficiency in underwriting management systems such as Applied Epic or ImageRight
- Experience reviewing insurance applications, policies, or endorsements for accuracy
- Strong data entry skills with attention to detail in high-volume processing environments

Tips for Your Underwriting Assistant Job Search
Tailor your resume for underwriting workflows
Highlight specific underwriting systems you've used, such as Applied Epic, ImageRight, or proprietary carrier platforms. Recruiters scan for tool names first. List any exposure to rating, policy issuance, or endorsement processing, even if it came from a related role.
Earn a CPCU or AINS designation early
Completing even one CPCU or AINS exam module before you apply signals to carriers that you're serious about a career in underwriting, not just an administrative role. Many job postings list these as preferred, and they move your resume past initial filters.
Filter openings by line of business first
Property and casualty, life and health, and specialty lines each require different product knowledge. Applying to roles aligned with the lines you already understand, or have studied, keeps your cover letter concrete and your interview answers grounded in real context.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists underwriting assistant openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for a file-review exercise in interviews
Many underwriting teams give candidates a sample submission or application file and ask them to identify missing information or flag risk issues. Practice walking through a commercial or personal lines application and articulating what an underwriter would need before binding coverage.
Negotiate start date around licensing timelines
If you're pursuing a property and casualty producer license, some carriers will hire you contingent on passing it within 90 days. Ask about that option during the offer stage rather than waiting, because it can open roles that might otherwise screen you out upfront.
Underwriting Assistant Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most underwriting assistants?
The companies hiring the most underwriting assistants right now include FCCI Insurance, First American, and Frank Winston Crum Insurance, with the largest share of openings in Florida, California, and Pennsylvania, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Carrier and managing general agent roles dominate the volume, though regional brokerages and specialty insurers also post regularly.
How many underwriting assistant jobs are remote?
About 42% of underwriting assistant openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with remote availability highest in personal lines processing and policy administration roles. Commercial lines and specialty positions are more likely to require in-office presence, particularly during training periods when mentorship from senior underwriters is part of the onboarding structure.
How do you become an underwriting assistant?
Start by earning a degree in business, finance, or insurance, or build a foundation through customer service or data-entry roles at a carrier or brokerage. Get familiar with insurance terminology and at least one line of business, such as property and casualty. Pursuing an AINS designation while job searching strengthens your application, and many entry-level openings will consider candidates who are in progress on licensing or coursework.
Can you get an underwriting assistant job with little experience?
Yes, many carriers hire underwriting assistants directly out of college or from adjacent roles like claims support, insurance customer service, or financial data entry. The key is demonstrating attention to detail, comfort with documentation workflows, and basic knowledge of insurance products. Showing you've studied for or enrolled in an AINS or CPCU course goes a long way when your direct experience is limited.
What does the underwriting assistant interview process look like?
Most underwriting assistant interviews run two to three rounds. The first is typically a phone screen with HR covering your background and interest in insurance. A second round with a hiring manager or underwriting team usually includes questions about how you handle high-volume tasks, catch errors, and learn new systems. Some employers add a practical exercise where you review a sample application or policy document and identify issues or missing fields.
Where can I find and apply to underwriting assistant jobs?
You can find and apply to underwriting assistant jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level, preferred line of business, and location, then apply directly to each one that fits.
