Tips for Your Underwriting Assistant Job Search
Tailor your resume to underwriting workflows
Highlight experience with policy issuance, premium calculations, and risk evaluation rather than listing generic administrative skills. Recruiters scanning underwriting assistant resumes look for familiarity with submission intake, loss runs, and endorsement processing specific to the lines you've worked.
Earn an AINS or AU designation early
The Associate in Insurance (AINS) and Associate in Underwriting (AU) credentials signal commitment and technical grounding that separates entry-level candidates. Even completing one or two courses before applying demonstrates initiative that pure experience alone won't show on a resume.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists underwriting assistant openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by line of business
Property and casualty, life and health, and surety underwriting each use different systems and rating tools. When searching for openings, prioritize roles in the line of business where you have hands-on experience to avoid skill-gap questions in interviews.
Prepare for scenario-based interview questions
Interviewers often ask how you'd handle a borderline submission or a policy with missing risk information. Practice walking through your thought process on real examples from your work history, focusing on how you gathered data, escalated decisions, and documented outcomes.
Negotiate using role-specific benchmarks
Before discussing compensation, research what underwriting assistants in your line of business and region earn using Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational data. Referencing line-of-business differences and your specific systems experience, such as Applied Epic or ImageRight, strengthens your position more than a generic market-rate argument.
Underwriting Assistant Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most underwriting assistants?
AmTrust Financial, Jencap, and Crum & Forster are hiring the most underwriting assistants right now, with openings concentrated in New Jersey, Illinois, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Demand is especially active at regional carriers and wholesale brokerages expanding their commercial lines teams.
How many underwriting assistant jobs are remote?
About 85% of underwriting assistant openings are fully remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with remote availability highest in personal lines and excess and surplus lines roles where policy processing can be done independently. Commercial lines and specialty underwriting positions more often require on-site collaboration with underwriters and risk analysts.
How do you become an underwriting assistant?
Start by completing a degree in business, finance, or a related field, then gain exposure to insurance operations through an entry-level role in policy services, claims support, or customer service at a carrier or agency. Build technical skills in underwriting software, pursue an AINS designation to demonstrate professional commitment, and apply to assistant roles that match the line of business where you have the most background.
Can you get hired as an underwriting assistant with little or no experience?
Yes, many carriers hire underwriting assistants directly out of college or from adjacent roles in claims, customer service, or insurance operations. Employers hiring candidates with limited experience prioritize attention to detail, comfort with data entry, and basic familiarity with insurance concepts over years of underwriting-specific work. An AINS course or a related internship can close the gap quickly.
What does the underwriting assistant interview process look like?
Most underwriting assistant interviews run two to three rounds, starting with a recruiter screen focused on your insurance background and software familiarity. A second round with a hiring manager or underwriter typically includes scenario questions about handling incomplete submissions, prioritizing a high-volume queue, or identifying a red flag in a risk application. Some employers add a short data-accuracy or critical-thinking assessment before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to underwriting assistant jobs?
You can find and apply to underwriting assistant jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search for roles that match your line-of-business experience and apply directly to each listing that fits your background.
