Impact
Shipt is on the lookout for an Engineering Manager, come join us. Your day begins by leading and collaborating with a dedicated team of engineers focused on building the frontends for Shipt’s critical catalog management and marketing tools. Your day-to-day life involves partnering closely with product counterparts to strategize and prioritize work, jumping into architecture and design decisions, reviewing code, and facilitating 1-on-1s to mentor and grow your team members.
The success of your tools depends on deep partnerships across multiple engineering teams, making collaboration the rule, not the exception. Ultimately, you are responsible for delivering robust software that empowers Shipt's internal operations teams, translating complex ambiguity into actionable engineering tasks that align directly with the company's strategic vision.
This is a hybrid role that is based in one of our three office hubs: Birmingham, AL; Minneapolis, MN; or San Francisco, CA, so you need to be located near one of these to designate as your home office.
What You’ll Need to Be Successful
- A Minimum of 4 years of professional software engineering experience independently designing, building, and deploying scalable modern web applications and distributed microservices using tools like React, GraphQL, and Playwright.
- Proven project leadership experience, successfully guiding 1 to 3 complex, cross-functional initiatives from ambiguous requirements to production delivery without requiring daily oversight or guidance.
- Prior experience mentoring or managing a team of engineers, conducting thorough code reviews, coaching individuals on their career development, and analyzing team metrics to inform strategic organizational decisions.
- Hands-on experience with AI and Agentic Engineering, explicitly utilizing AI coding tools and inputs to accelerate development workflows, solve challenging problems, and optimize high-performing web applications.
- Strong operational execution skills, demonstrated by successfully tracking dependencies, identifying risks, maintaining high observability for large-scale projects using systems like Jira and GitHub Issues, and monitoring for running systems with tools like DataDog or BugSnag.
- Full stack understanding will be helpful as you work with engineering partners who own backend assets; however, you will not be expected to own full-stack development within your team.
- Cloud hosting and deployment knowledge helps you navigate our hosting environment. Our app hosting patterns are solidified, but a basic understanding of containers, kubernetes, and CI tools informs your architectural decisions and is a solid baseline for troubleshooting.

Which companies sponsor visas for engineering managers in Alabama?
Huntsville-based defense and aerospace contractors are the most active sponsors for engineering manager roles in Alabama. Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon Technologies, and Northrop Grumman have filed H-1B visa petitions for engineering management positions. In Birmingham, companies in the automotive supply chain and healthcare technology sectors also sponsor. Large federal contractors with government programs in the Tennessee Valley tend to have established immigration support infrastructure.
Which visa types are most common for engineering manager roles in Alabama?
The H-1B is the most common visa for engineering managers in Alabama, as the role typically requires a bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or a related technical field, satisfying the specialty occupation requirement. Some candidates pursue the EB-2 immigrant visa for permanent residence, particularly those with advanced degrees. Defense contractors occasionally support L-1A visas for managers transferring from international offices.
Which cities in Alabama have the most engineering manager sponsorship jobs?
Huntsville leads by a significant margin, driven by the presence of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, Redstone Arsenal, and a dense cluster of aerospace and defense contractors. Birmingham is the secondary hub, with engineering manager roles spread across healthcare technology, manufacturing, and infrastructure firms. Smaller concentrations exist in Tuscaloosa, tied to automotive manufacturing, and Decatur, linked to chemical and industrial operations.
How to find engineering manager visa sponsorship jobs in Alabama?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship and filters engineering manager roles in Alabama by employers with a documented history of sponsoring. Rather than sorting through unfiltered postings, you can focus on companies that have filed H-1B petitions for engineering management positions in cities like Huntsville and Birmingham. Searching by role and state on Migrate Mate helps narrow the field quickly.
Are there state-specific factors that affect engineering manager sponsorship in Alabama?
Alabama's engineering manager market is heavily influenced by federal security clearances. Many Huntsville-based roles require or prefer candidates with active U.S. security clearances, which foreign nationals on H-1B visas cannot typically hold. This narrows the sponsorship pool to employers working on unclassified programs or willing to hire into non-cleared roles. UAB and the University of Alabama also feed local talent pipelines, and some academic institutions sponsor engineering management roles directly.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored engineering manager jobs in Alabama?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
