Which companies sponsor visas for engineering managers in Virginia?
Northern Virginia's technology and defense sector produces the most engineering manager sponsorship activity. Amazon Web Services, Leidos, Booz Allen Hamilton, Northrop Grumman, Peraton, and Capital One have all filed H-1B petitions for engineering manager roles in Virginia. Cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, and defense IT are the dominant industries driving sponsorship for this position in the state.
Which visa types are most common for engineering manager roles in Virginia?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for engineering managers in Virginia, given that the role typically requires a bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, computer science, or a related field, satisfying the specialty occupation requirement. Multinational employees transferring within the same company may qualify for the L-1A, which is designed for managers and executives. Some candidates also enter through O-1 if they have documented extraordinary achievement.
Which cities in Virginia have the most engineering manager sponsorship jobs?
Northern Virginia, particularly the cities of Arlington, Reston, Herndon, and McLean, accounts for the largest share of engineering manager sponsorship in the state. This corridor is home to a dense cluster of federal contractors, cloud providers, and cybersecurity firms. Richmond is a secondary market, with finance and healthcare technology employers sponsoring engineering managers there. Charlottesville occasionally sees activity tied to university-adjacent technology companies.
How to find engineering manager visa sponsorship jobs in Virginia?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for visa sponsorship eligibility, making it practical to search engineering manager roles in Virginia without sorting through positions that won't support a visa. Northern Virginia's defense and cloud sectors post engineering manager openings regularly. Using Migrate Mate to filter by state and role gives you a current view of which Virginia employers are actively sponsoring for this position.
Are there any Virginia-specific considerations for engineering managers seeking visa sponsorship?
Virginia's heavy concentration of federal contractors introduces a layer of complexity for engineering managers: many roles require security clearances, which are generally unavailable to foreign nationals who are not permanent residents or citizens. This narrows the sponsoring employer pool compared to states with broader commercial tech sectors. Engineering managers targeting Virginia should focus on commercial technology employers rather than cleared defense contractors, particularly in the cloud and cybersecurity segments.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored engineering manager jobs in Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
