DESCRIPTION
AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we're the people who keep the cloud running. Our team builds AWS Intent Driven Networking (AIDN), the management plane at the heart of the AWS network that compiles declarative intent into network state and applies it to the target fabric. AIDN operates across every AWS region, and we're making it more robust and scalable as we onboard new fabric types and network layers. You'll design and build distributed systems where correctness, safety, velocity and blast radius all matter. You'll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers and collaborate with people across AWS to deliver the highest standards for safety and security. We work on some of the most challenging problems in infrastructure at scale, and we're looking for talented engineers who want to take them on. You'll find an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Key job responsibilities
As a Software Development Engineer on AIDN, you own the full software development lifecycle — design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operational maintenance — for components across the platform. Your components must be secure by design and meet a high bar for consistency, availability, and network safety. You bring distributed systems knowledge and networking fundamentals to every design decision, anticipating how your software behaves at scale and under degraded conditions and factoring those scenarios in from the start. You own your components independently, make sound technical trade-offs within your area, and hold your work to a high engineering standard: extensible design and well-defined interfaces. You continuously raise operational posture through the right metrics, monitoring, and alarms that give clear visibility into platform health. You provide meaningful feedback through design and code reviews, mentor less-experienced engineers, and proactively communicate progress, risks, and blockers. You collaborate across team boundaries and contribute to the team's technical direction.
About the team
We are the AWS Intent Driven Networking (AIDN) team, part of the Core Networking organization within AWS Networking. We own the management plane for the AWS network, with a mission to make AWS networks consistent, safe, predictable, and agile at the scale of the world's largest cloud infrastructure. Want to see what it's like to work here? Meet Matt, Director of Core Networking.

Which companies sponsor visas for development engineers in California?
California's technology sector produces some of the most active development engineer visa sponsors in the country. Companies like Apple, Google, Intel, Qualcomm, Broadcom, NVIDIA, and Applied Materials have consistent histories of H-1B visa filings for development engineer roles. Aerospace and defense employers such as Northrop Grumman and Raytheon also sponsor development engineers, particularly in Southern California.
Which visa types are most common for development engineer roles in California?
The H-1B is the most common visa for development engineers in California, as most roles require at least a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field, meeting the specialty occupation standard. Candidates with extraordinary achievement may pursue the O-1A. Australians can use the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and is frequently used at California-based tech employers. L-1B visas apply when engineers transfer within multinational companies.
Which cities in California have the most development engineer sponsorship jobs?
The San Francisco Bay Area, including San Jose, Sunnyvale, and Santa Clara, concentrates the largest share of development engineer sponsorship positions due to its semiconductor and software company density. San Diego is a strong secondary market, particularly for hardware and telecom development roles tied to Qualcomm and its supply chain. Los Angeles has growing demand in aerospace, defense, and consumer electronics development.
How to find development engineer visa sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate filters development engineer roles specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can search California positions without sorting through employers who don't sponsor. The platform surfaces roles from companies with active H-1B and other visa filing histories, which is particularly useful in California where large tech employers sponsor frequently but hiring teams vary in their responsiveness to international candidates.
Are there any California-specific considerations for development engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
California's prevailing wage requirements under Department of Labor rules tend to reflect the state's higher cost of living, meaning employers filing Labor Condition Applications for development engineer roles must certify competitive wages benchmarked to local market rates. University pipelines from UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego, and Stanford produce large pools of engineering talent, which means international candidates should expect competitive hiring processes at most major California sponsors.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored development engineer jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
