Which companies sponsor visas for occupational therapists in California?
Large health systems are the most consistent sponsors for occupational therapists in California. Kaiser Permanente, Dignity Health, Sutter Health, Cedars-Sinai, and Stanford Health Care have all sponsored OT roles in recent years. Skilled nursing facility operators like Kindred Healthcare and Genesis Healthcare also sponsor regularly. School districts and pediatric therapy networks occasionally sponsor, though less frequently than hospital systems.
Which visa types are most common for occupational therapist roles in California?
The H-1B is the most common visa for occupational therapists in California, as OT roles qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a master's degree under current USCIS standards. Some employers also use the EB-3 immigrant visa pathway for permanent residency sponsorship. Candidates from Australia may qualify for the E-3 visa, and Canadian and Mexican nationals may explore TN status, which includes occupational therapy as a listed profession.
Which cities in California have the most occupational therapist sponsorship jobs?
Los Angeles has the highest concentration of OT sponsorship opportunities in California, supported by its large hospital networks, rehabilitation centers, and school districts. San Francisco and the broader Bay Area follow closely, particularly for outpatient and pediatric roles. San Diego has strong demand tied to its VA medical system and hospital groups. Sacramento is a growing market, especially within Sutter Health and UC Davis Health.
How to find occupational therapist visa sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter by role and state to see occupational therapist positions in California where employers have a documented history of visa sponsorship. This saves significant time compared to applying broadly and discovering late in the process that sponsorship isn't available. Migrate Mate surfaces both H-1B and other visa-type sponsoring employers across California's major metro areas.
Are there state-specific requirements OTs should know before pursuing sponsorship in California?
Yes. California requires occupational therapists to hold a license from the California Board of Occupational Therapy before practicing, regardless of visa status. Employers initiating H-1B sponsorship must file a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor certifying that the offered wage meets California's prevailing wage for the OT role and location, which can be higher than federal benchmarks given California's cost of living. Licensing timelines should be factored into your start date planning.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored occupational therapist jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
