Which companies sponsor visas for civil engineers in Hawaii?
Engineering firms with active federal and state infrastructure contracts are the most consistent sponsors. SSFM International, R.M. Towill Corporation, Wilson Okamoto Corporation, and Belt Collins Hawaii have histories of hiring internationally trained engineers. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and naval facility contractors on Oahu also sponsor civil engineers, particularly for structural, geotechnical, and water resources roles tied to military base projects.
Which visa types are most common for civil engineer roles in Hawaii?
The H-1B is the most common visa for civil engineers in Hawaii, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering. Some engineers at multinational firms transfer via L-1B visas. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify for the TN visa under the USMCA, which lists engineers as an eligible occupation and does not require an annual lottery.
Which cities in Hawaii have the most civil engineer sponsorship jobs?
Honolulu accounts for the large majority of civil engineer sponsorship jobs in Hawaii, given its concentration of engineering firms, state agencies, and federal contractors. Pearl Harbor and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam generate significant demand on Oahu. Kahului on Maui sees activity around transportation and water infrastructure projects, while Hilo on the Big Island has a smaller but present engineering employer base tied to county and state contracts.
How to find civil engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Hawaii?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for visa sponsorship, making it straightforward to browse civil engineer openings in Hawaii without sorting through positions that don't support international candidates. You can search by role and state to surface employers actively sponsoring H-1B or other work visas for civil engineering positions, including firms working on Hawaii's infrastructure, water systems, and military facility projects.
Are there any state-specific considerations for civil engineers seeking sponsorship in Hawaii?
Hawaii requires civil engineers to hold a Professional Engineer license issued by the Hawaii Board of Professional Engineers for certain project types, which is separate from visa sponsorship but relevant to long-term career progression in the state. The University of Hawaii at Manoa produces a pipeline of engineering graduates, meaning local competition exists. Hawaii's geographic isolation means infrastructure investment is steady, but the overall engineering job market is smaller than mainland states, so employer targeting matters.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored civil engineer jobs in Hawaii?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
