Which investment management companies sponsor F-1 STEM OPT visas in Illinois?
Illinois-based firms with histories of sponsoring STEM OPT workers in investment management include Morningstar, Northern Trust, Citadel, Baird, and William Blair. Larger asset managers and quantitative trading firms filing Labor Condition Applications with the DOL tend to have established OPT sponsorship workflows. Checking DOL OFLC disclosure data by employer name gives a clearer picture of which firms actively file for these roles.
Which cities in Illinois have the most investment management F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the overwhelming majority of investment management STEM OPT sponsorship opportunities in Illinois. The Loop and River North financial districts house most major asset managers, hedge funds, and derivatives firms. Suburbs such as Schaumburg and Downers Grove host some financial services operations, but for investment management roles with active STEM OPT sponsorship, Chicago proper is where hiring is concentrated.
What types of investment management roles typically qualify for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship?
Roles that typically qualify carry SOC codes classified under STEM by ICE, including quantitative analyst, data scientist, financial engineer, risk analyst, and investment technology developer. Positions requiring a bachelor's or advanced degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or financial engineering are most consistently STEM-designated. Portfolio management and client-facing advisory roles may not qualify unless the underlying degree and SOC code align with ICE's STEM list.
How do I find investment management F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate lets you filter investment management jobs in Illinois specifically by F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship, showing employer LCA filing history so you can identify firms that have sponsored comparable roles before. This is more reliable than applying broadly and asking about sponsorship later. Focus your search on quantitative, data, and technology-oriented roles at Chicago-based asset managers, where STEM OPT eligibility is most commonly established.
Are there any Illinois-specific or industry-specific considerations for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship in investment management?
Illinois does not impose state-level restrictions on OPT employment, but investment management firms in Chicago often require FINRA licensing for certain roles, which can complicate the OPT timeline since licensing exams take time. Some firms also require Series 3 or Series 65 registration for trading-adjacent roles. Confirming that a role's SOC code appears on the ICE STEM Designated Degree Program list before accepting an offer is essential, as not all finance-labeled positions qualify.
